Year 5 w/b 9th November
Date: 14th Nov 2020 @ 8:51pm
It has been another very busy week in Y5.
We have been looking at all faiths in worship this week. On Tuesday Rev. Sandi came to talk to us about the similarities between faiths and what we can learn from each other.
In maths we have completed this half term's work on multiplication and division and began looking at reading tables and charts. It is lovely to see children gaining confidence in maths skills. In all units, we are working on accuracy and checking our work as this seems to be where the most errors are made. If you are looking to support children at home, try giving some addition and subtraction questions. For example, 1789 + 12300 or 3476-387. Encourage children to think carefully and check their work for errors.
In English we have continued to look at Henry’s Freedom Box and Unspoken to inspire our writing. We have been practising the skills needed for diary writing, spellings and learning about modal verbs. We will be writing diaries in character next week.
We have reached the end of chapter 6 of Rooftoppers and as the children read more and more about Sophie remembering her mother as a cello player, they are becoming convinced the story is based on Mrs Tice! It is lovely to see them so engaged in the story: thank you for supporting by buying copies of the text.
In history we have been learning about the American Civil War and went to the playground to draw a timeline of events. The children had remembered the name Abraham Lincoln from There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom and drew him with a very tall hat! They also learned that the end of the war began the freedom of slaves in southern states of America.
We have a new set of safe clues for the children to work on. The class are awarded a clue each time they work well as a team. Once they have enough clues to crack the code and open the safe, they win a treat. This time, they have requested a baking afternoon.
You may have noticed information about spending time online on our newsletter. We understand that children are using gaming and online communication more than ever in these difficult times, but online fall outs can be difficult to resolve and can impact children in school. Please so spend a few minutes talking to children about safety and behaviour online and do let us know if you have specific concerns. We will also be completing work on this in school.
Next week we will also be working on Brereton’s Community Christmas display and Y5 in outdoor learning. Lots to look forward to!
