Happy New Year!
It has been lovely to welcome Y5 back to school and hear about their Christmas break. We have also welcomed Mr Collier to our class team who will be working with us on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
We have started new units of work. In English we are looking at the books 'Where We Once Stood' and 'Hidden Figures' which focus on the moon landings. To help children imagine how it might feel to land on the moon we were visited by an astronaut! Apparently, he looked a lot like Mr Collier but had an american accent!
In Guided Reading we have been reading a newspaper report about the moon landings, understanding new vocabulary, retrieving information and thinking about why the astronauts left a plaque behind. This morning we also read with our Y3 reading buddies. Our patron of reading, Mrs Winward, has been working with Mrs Lindersen to promote reading for pleasure and the children all selected books they thought their buddies would enjoy. It was lovely to hear the positivity about the books they had selected.
In RE on Monday we thought about the most important thing anyone had ever taught us. We then thought about Jesus as a teacher and worked in groups to act out some of the parables before thinking about their true meaning and what Jesus was trying to teach.
On Tuesday we began Mini Medics with Mr Aspinall. Each week we will have PE with him, but also learn about our mental health. This week we thought about how our mental and physical health are linked, what makes us happy and how we can solve problems ourselves.
In Maths we have been working on written multiplication. This was tricky to start with. Helping children to revise times tables is one the most useful ways to help with this. There is also a link to a video of the method if you would like to support children at home or children would like some help with homework. https://youtu.be/PZjIT9CH6bM?si=-kV57b0QZxVxHv6r
In Music, children are working on performance poetry using their voice for effect. We will also continue to practise for our Singfest concert in March. We our our final group rehearsal with HCCS in February.
In PSHE, we have been learning about how to stay safe online. Through watching a series of videos, we discussed the characters' actions/choices and what we could learn from them such as checking that we have permission before posting a picture of someone online, the importance of keeping passwords safe, and knowing what to do if we feel uncomfortable or upset about something we have seen online.
In history, we have started our new topic about the Shang Dynasty. We looked at how we know about this ancient civilisation through artefacts that have been found, ancient writing and the discovery of a tomb in 1976.
Children have completed their first science lesson on Earth and Space this afternoon and it is lovely to see so many children enthused about the topic.
We hope everyone has a lovely weekend.
