Year 5 w/b 5th February
Date: 9th Feb 2024 @ 2:12pm
This week began with our final rehearsal with Love Music Trust for Singfest. The children are enjoying learning the songs - particularly the villains medley!
In maths, we have been working on converting fractions to decimals. The children can now confidently convert tenths and hundredths to decimals and have memorised 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4. We will continue this work next week looking at thousandths before moving on to percentages to end the half term.
Mrs Field has been so impressed with the quality of children’s’ published writing this week. Children have written an imaginary account of a Mars Landing based on Neil Armstrong's moon landing. It is wonderful to see the progress children have made since the beginning of the year and we look forward to sharing their progress with you at consultations next half term.
In guided reading we have continued to look at the poem - The Wind and The Moon. Children have been using their inference and summary skills to explain their impressions of the wind and justifying their opinions with extracts from the text.
In science children have completed the topic on Earth and Space. It was lovely to see some children enjoying keeping a moon diary - this knowledge also helped them in their reading this week!
Mrs Tice has completed performance poetry in music and I know the children have enjoyed performing poems in this way. She has also completed the last lesson using sonic pi in computing and it has been wonderful for children to use their knowledge to link both subjects making soundscapes.
This week was also Children's Mental Health Week and Safer Internet Day. Both were introduced with a whole school assembly and children followed this up with lessons in class. This linked well with our Mini Medics work with Mr Aspinall. Please ask your children about these lessons at home. It has been fantastic to listen to their responses and see how they have managed problems independently.
Next week, teachers keep their own class to complete our half term's learning and our DT unit. Children will also be working on a piece of artwork as part of their RE assessment based on The Big Frieze by Emma Yarlett which presents Bible Stories in a very visual way.
