Year 5 w/b 29th January
Date: 31st Jan 2024 @ 12:29pm
It has been another busy week in Y5!
Rev Sandi delivered worship on Wednesday. The children had a lovely surprise - St Oswald's church and the school have joined together to purchase each child a Bible. Our new RE scheme of work looks more closely at stories from the Bible and the children will now have opportunity to find passages in their own Bible and mark those of meaning to them. These Bibles will come home at the end of Y6 as a gift from their time with us. The children have been very keen to look at them reading the parables we have looked at this half term.
In Mini Medics this week Mr Aspinall talked about loneliness, depression and anxiety. We talked about what was a normal reaction and what we could do if we were feeling sad or worried for a long time. The children talked about people they could talk to and the 5 ways to wellbeing. We then engaged in activity (on of the ways to wellbeing) completing PE assessments. This involved completing a range of activities in a time limit. Mrs Field and I were so impressed by the children's abilities! It is lovely to see the talents we have in Year 5.
In guided reading we have continued to read texts linked to the Earth and Space science unit. This week we looked at the layout features of non-fiction texts and how these engage the reader before moving on to The Wind and The Moon - a poem by George MacDonald. The children thought about what was happening in the poem and who was more powerful and why.
In maths, we completed our work on multiplying fractions and moved on to finding fractions of quantities. The children can confidently divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator and have looked at a range of problems asking them to apply their learning and think more deeply about what they are doing.
In English, we have started writing our exploration narratives about landing on Mars. We watched a video about the red planet to gain some knowledge that would inform our writing. Then we have been applying all our learning from the last few weeks to write an extended piece. Mrs Field and Mr Collier have been very impressed with how hard the children have been working, using lots of interesting vocabulary and using Year 5 punctuation.
In RE we looked at The Big Frieze by Emma Yarlett. We then split into groups to consider the pictures and images we could use to represent the parables we have looked at in a similar way. This work will be completed and displayed at St Oswald's before half term.
In history we found out about the beliefs of the Shangs such as they were polytheists (believed in more than one god) and they believed their ancestors were the stars in heaven. We were very interested to learn how they used oracle bones to predict the future: a priest would write questions and then hit them with a hot rod until they cracked. These cracks would then be interpreted to answer the questions.
In Spanish we are learning about hobbies. So far we have learnt 10 verbs to talk about our hobbies. The BBC has a wonderful page if you would like to extend this learning at home - Hobbies - KS2 Spanish - BBC Bitesize - BBC Bitesize
