Year 5 w/b 15th January
Date: 19th Jan 2024 @ 12:20pm
In writing this week we have been learning more about the moon landings. We have explored new vocabulary and learnt lots of new technical words to do with the equipment they used. We've also recapped punctuating direct speech by putting the conversation between the astronauts and CAPCOM into a paragraph and added description to make it more interesting.
We have furthered this knowledge in guided reading a news report, biography and information booklet about Neil Armstrong and the women who worked at NASA. We have found ways to predict the meaning of new words by reading the text and practised answering questions in different formats.
In Maths, we have been dividing up to 4 digits by a single digit using the bus stop method. Please keep practising times tables as being able to recall these quickly really does help when working with bigger numbers. In PSHE we have been discussing dares. We talked about what a dare was, how they can make people feel and what to do if you're asked to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
We also had a workshop with NSPCC on Tuesday who talked to us about staying safe. We realised we know lots of ways to stay safe and the adults around us also do lots of things to keep us safe.
In history we have been learning about Fu Hao, a military leader and priestess whose tomb was discovered in 1976. We looked at some photographs of the hundreds of artefacts that were found and discussed what we could learn about Fu Hao from these.
In our Mini Medics session with Mr Aspinall, he talked to us about happiness being a choice. It's okay to feel different emotions as a reaction to something, but we can also help ourselves to feel happier/more positive. In our PE session we focussed on putting others' feelings before our own,
In Art we began a new unit looking at the work of Clemetine Hunter who was a self-taught American artist. We commented on the work and technique and will be producing our own works over the next few weeks.
In RE we continued to look at Parables. We thought about Jesus as a teacher and the message he was trying to convey. On Monday we will be considering the most important thing Jesus taught and holding a debate to discuss our thoughts.
Homework due in on Monday is maths P.22 and English p.8. Mr Aspinall also asked children to try to do something which makes them happy every day - but we won't be collecting it in!
