Year 5 w.b 11th September
Date: 15th Sep 2023 @ 8:03pm
In English this week we have been exploring new vocabulary from our book, The Errand, as well as being introduced to the model text that we’ll use to structure our own writing. The children really impressed us with their eagerness to experiment with new words and came up with some interesting similes when writing a setting description about the Whispering Woods.
In Maths we have continued with our place value unit working with numbers up to one million, developing their understanding of each of the digits and learning to read and write numbers accurately using both numbers and words. We then moved on to counting forwards and backwards in steps of 10, 100, 1000 and 10000.
On Monday we were introduced to our new history topic about the slave trade. We discussed the difference between what a servant is and a slave, understanding that an enslaved person wasn’t paid and didn’t have the choice to leave if they wanted to. The children looked at various sources of information such as auction records and pictures, discussing in their groups what these told them about slavery and the slave trade.
On Thursday, we visited St Oswalds for our class service. Kaiden and Chloe led our service and Rev. Sandi demonstrated the hurt we can cause with our words (using toothpaste!). After the service we enjoyed a drink, biscuit and chat before returning to school.
In RE we have been looking at what The Bible is to Christians. The children had some thoughtful answers such as - The Bible is the light and it shows us the way, the Bible is our guide.
The children have also revised some Spanish conversation skills. They were so confident they wanted to test their skill against Miss Richardson.
This week we have confirmed that Year 5 will be taking part in Singfest which is a concert that takes place with other local schools in March at Congleton Town Hall. Over the next two terms we shall be practising songs with a Heroes and Villains theme. On Monday 2nd October, we’ll be having our first rehearsal in school. We are also looking forward to our visit to Chester Cathedral for Pilgrim Day on Monday 9th October. We will leave school at 8:30am, have a tour of the cathedral, organ and explore how it was used in the past (dressing up as Benedictine Monks and taking a vow of silence) in the morning. In the afternoon children will take part in art, stained glass or sugarcraft workshops.
