Year 5 w/b 11th December

Date: 15th Dec 2023 @ 8:01pm

I can hardly believe we are nearing the end of the children's first term in Y5! This week the children have been working hard to complete their autumn term units of work as well as having lots of fun this week.

We began the week with worship watching a beautiful video of what the first Christmas may have been like. We thought about how the people there may have felt and what they may have prayed for. We then wrote our own prayers during reflection time.

On Tuesday, we went to see The Nutcracker at the New Vic Theatre. It was a wonderful retelling of the story with lots of magical moments such as a ladder being pulled from a small bag and snow falling. The children seemed particularly keen to visit the 'Land of Sweets!'

In English, we have been writing out biographies about Harriet Tubman using the features we have been learning about over the last couple of weeks. We have been very impressed with the children's efforts in writing this term and the great progress we have seen since September.

In geography we compared an area of North America with our local area. We researched the size, language spoken, currency, climate and geographical features of each area.

In PSHE, we learnt about personal space, when it is okay to enter someone's personal space and how to respond if we're uncomfortable. We then discussed different types physical contact and what is appropriate for family/friends/school staff.

We have completed our Christmas unit in RE by looking again at Christmas traditions and where these come from. Children also answered the question 'why do Christians think Jesus was the Mesiah?' The children enjoyed demonstrating their knowledge answering a kahoot quiz. Their only complaint was that the quiz wasn't long enough so I have challenged them to add question with the correct answers for next year.

This morning, we worked with Mr Simmons to design Christmas cards and this afternoon we, of course, sang beautifully at the Carol Service. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend. It was lovely to see the church so full at this special time of year.

We have lots to look forward to in our final three days of the term, including our Christmas party on Monday afternoon. Due to this it is a non-uniform day for children in Y5 and Y6 on Monday - we just ask that clothes are suitable for school including break and lunchtime.
