Year 5 w/b 10th June

Date: 14th Jun 2024 @ 12:36pm

We’ve had another busy week in Year 5. We started the week with our Young Leaders project exploring global issues of injustice through studying the lives of families in Kolkata, India. The children completed the paper bag challenge seeing how many they could make in 10 minutes. Then they used this to work out how many they could make in a week working 10 hours a day, 7 days a week and whether this would make them enough money to survive. Families in Kolkata use the money they make from paper bags to buy everything they need: food, medicine, clothes and somewhere to live. We also discussed how this was just one part of India and doesn’t mean that all of India is in poverty; there are actually some very wealthy areas too.
In RE we learnt that that when a person places their faith in Jesus, God transforms their life.  God has a purpose for each believer as they follow and serve Jesus. We listened to the story of Saul who treated Jesus and his followers unfairly. Jesus came to Saul and spoke to him. God told Saul to change his heart and life and Saul began to serve and obey God.
This week, in Science, we started our unit on human life cycles by looking at the gestation (or prenatal) period in humans and comparing the length of them to a number of other mammals. We then investigated how an embryo develops into a foetus in the womb by looking at different stages of pregnancy and how the foetus grows over time.
In Computing, Year 5 have continued their tinkering with the device, micro:bit. This week, we have been learning how to code an animation. The LED patterns are inputted frame by frame and then downloaded onto the device which displays them continuously. Examples achieved by the pupils include crawling worms, waving stickmen and moving hearts.
In history, the children have looked at the human features of India - researching key mountains and rivers. They then presented their information to the class.
In English we have been exploring our model text- a survival narrative. We’ve been learning new vocabulary and practised using semi-colons, and then we analysed the features of the writing such as how the writer hinted that something was going to happen and how they created a sense of danger in the story.
Next week is Sports Week so Mr McAulay has organised some active breaktimes with different teachers running various clubs such as rounders, yoga, athletics. Hopefully the children will enjoy taking part in a range of sports throughout the week. We’ll have our usual PE lesson on Tuesday and on Wednesday, Key Stage 2 will be having a sports morning, so please ensure PE kits are available for both these days.

Have a great weekend!
