Year 5 so far

Date: 30th Sep 2022 @ 4:25pm

Year 5 have had a super start to the term and have embraced their new timetable.

In Maths we have been working hard on place value, ensuring children have a secure understanding of numbers up to a million. They have been partitioning numbers, ordering, comparing, finding more/less and understanding where they sit on a number line. We are now moving onto addition and subtraction, starting with mental strategies and then using formal written methods building on what they did in Year 4. After this unit, we’ll be focusing on multiplication and division. Therefore, please continue to go on TT Rockstars and keep those times tables recall sharp.

In English we have spent the last few weeks working toward writing a character narrative. We have been exploring new vocabulary and phrases, looking up their definitions and finding synonyms which we can use in our writing. Then we analysed a model text, looking at techniques the writer has used and then this week we have been writing our own narratives. The children have some excellent ideas and are trying hard to improve their vocabulary and experiment with new Year 5 punctuation. Next week we’ll be starting our next unit of work leading towards writing a newspaper report.

In History we have continued to learn about the International Slave Trade. We have gone into more detail about how Africans were captured and enslaved; their journey along the Middle Passage and then how they lived as slaves in America. The children have studied different sources to learn about how they were brutally treated and what they endured on a daily basis. They have also learnt about the wants and needs of each country involved and how this enabled the slave trade to happen.

In Science¸ we have been studying ‘Living Things' and the children have been encouraged to think further about life cycles. We have learnt different forms of reproduction in animals and plants as well as comparing reproduction of frogs, butterflies and birds to find similarities and differences.

In RE, we have been learning about how Christians believe God speaks to people through the Bible.

We have studied Moses exodus form Egypt and the 10 Commandments as well as we compared and contrasted the them to Jesus’ commandments.
