Year 5 Multiplication
Date: 28th May 2015 @ 8:40pm
I hope you are all having a lovely half term and making the most of the break. Last half term was very exciting and we were delighted to have Miss McCann with us. She has now returned to St Gabriel's Primary School in Alsager and we wish her lots of luck in the final weeks of her training. She has promised to visit and we look forward to seeing her.
Next week we will be working on multiplication. This is the third time we have worked on this area and we will be revising written methods, but most of our work will focus on problem solving. Why not try this at home:
????
x 3
=?????
The whole calculation uses each of the digits 0−9 once and once only.
The 4-figure number contains three consecutive numbers, which are not in order. The third digit is the sum of two of the consecutive numbers.
The first, third and fifth figures of the five-digit product are three consecutive numbers, again not in order. The second and fourth digits are also consecutive numbers.
Can you replace the stars in the calculation with figures?
If you wish to try any of our written methods please watch the videos below. Most children will be using the efficient method for multiplication, however those who feel less confident or who don't yet have a secure knowledge of their times tables will use the grid method for support.
If any children successfully manage the challenge problem, I would love to see their answers!
