Year 4 Place Value
Date: 26th Apr 2015 @ 8:50pm
During the first week back in Maths we looked at place value. This included:
- Reading Roman numerals to 100
- Estimating numbers on a number line.
- Ordering and comparing 4 digit numbers.
- Rounding any number to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
- Solving problems using their understanding of place value.
How you can help at home
Although the children are becoming much more confident with place value, using it in a real life context can still be quite tricky. When out shopping, ask questions such as 'which costs more/less?' or ask them to put items in order of least to most expensive. If an item costs £3486 and it comes down/goes up in price by £100, how much does it cost now? Encourage them to look at which column they need to add to/subtract from.
I have added some links to useful websites for placing numbers on a number line and rounding games.
Next week (week commencing 27th April) we will be focusing on time: reading both digital and analogue clocks, converting to 24 hour clock and solving problems involving time.
