Date: 19th Nov 2020 @ 2:16pm
We have had a fantastic couple of weeks in Year 4. Thank you once more for support with reading, Rockstars and homework.
Please make sure you check your emails and sign up to Showbie should you need to self-isolate.
Maths
Our focus this week has been on addition using 4 digit numbers. We have been solving problems and reasoning while using the column method. Please look at the calculation policy on the Year 4 page for details about how we calculate and the methods taught.
English
Astonishingly, a crooked, evil witch entered our classroom and declared that she had stolen all of the happy endings from stories! She informed us that if we do not write twisted narratives with unhappy endings, then we will never get the happy endings back!
We have been analysing our model text and looking at the effectiveness of language, as well as writing various short burst pieces such as a conversation between the witch and Jub.
Guided Reading
We have been answering VIPERS questions about our new focus text The Secret of Platform 13! Our focus this week has been inference, summarising and vocabulary.
Spelling
We have been focusing on words which have /ch/ in them, but where it sounds like /sh/. E.g. chandelier, chalet.
RE
Our focus has been on the Christian community. We have looked at the activities some members of the church do and why, assessing which of our school values they show and linking this to Bible passages such as loving your neighbour as yourself.
Topic and other subjects
In history, we have been learning about rich and poor people in Tudor times, finishing our diaries, before tea staining and tearing our work for our topic books. We also looked at how London has changed over the last 500 years and compared an old map of Tudor London with London as we know it today.
In outdoor learning, we used clay to make self portraits in the woodland area, using natural materials such as sticks, acorns and leaves. Year 4 are now learning about the digestive system in Science with Mr Cotton and are currently conducting an experiment. In PE, we are now having sessions with Mr Rea and Mrs Walker from Multiflex. We have now had two football sessions and a basketball lesson to practise the principles of attacking and defending in another invasion game.
