Year 4 blog w.b. 10th May
Date: 14th May 2021 @ 6:11pm
We have had a wonderful fortnight; the children in Year 4 have worked very hard this half term. We have been learning all about the Vikings in various cross-curriculum activities!
I have been very impressed with the children’s endeavour and aspiration over the last few weeks, noticing a vast improvement in times table knowledge and speed! Thank you for your support at home with this. We will continue to focus on this in school in light of the times table test in June. Having a secure times table knowledge will be vital in the future, both in upper key stage two and beyond.
English, topic and outdoor learning
Our focus text for this half term is called ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope.’ We have been writing various short burst writing pieces which led to a final extended story- a myth narrative involving a hero going on a journey and slaying a monster!
Mysteriously, we received a letter from a Ragnar Skarssgard who informed us that their library in Reykjavik, Iceland has suffered a tragic fire and their monster hunter guides were unfortunately destroyed. We replied to his letter informing him that we would love to help to rewrite the monster hunting instructional guide and so, this will be our focus over the coming weeks.
In our history sessions we have been learning all about the Vikings, where they came from and why they raided and then invaded Britain, as well as learning about Anglo-Saxon kings during that period of history. We have also been making Viking weapons in our outdoor learning session, as well as making (and learning about) Viking long ships in our DT sessions! Amazingly, they reached North America and could travel using oars and the sail, making them very versatile indeed.
Maths
Our focus in Maths has been decimals! The children have done extremely well and have a good understanding which is fantastic considering this is the first time they have learned about decimals in school. We are now beginning to look at money which links very closely.
Other curriculum learning
In PE the children have been enjoying cricket sessions, improving their throwing, catching, batting and fielding skills. In RE this half term, the children have been learning about the Holy Spirit with Mrs Taylor and in Science we have been learning about sound, which is caused by vibrations! We have learned about amplitude, pitch and how sounds travel to our ears and what happens to sound over a longer distance.
Have a lovely weekend and please get in touch if you have any issues.
