Year 3 WC 28th November 2016

Date: 27th Nov 2016 @ 8:43pm

What a busy week we had last week! I'm sure the children have told you that they were doing assessments last week. These were for maths, reading, SPAG and spellings. Results of these will be shared with you via your child's planner this week. 'Expected' at this point in the year, means that your child is on track to achieve Year 3 'expected' at the end of the academic year.

On Friday we had a fantastic day immersing the children in our new text, Beowulf. We began with some drama, creating a soundscape of what it might have been like in the swamp. Then we imagined we were Grendel and thought about how he would 'skulk' around, considering our body language and facial expressions. Next we created freeze-frames at different points in the story. Lastly, we took on the role of Grendel's conscience in a conscience alley. Should he give into his desire to devour the humans or resist temptation?!

In the afternoon, we recreated the scene where Beowulf and Grendel fought in a bloodthirsty battle using stop motion animation on the IPads. For any children that are interested in having a go at this at home, the app we used was Lego Movie. We have uploaded some photos and videos onto a separate blog/gallery on the Year 3 page.

It has been great to see the children so enthused and keen to learn their times tables to achieve the Bronze times tables award. The idea of these is that children have just a few seconds to work out the answer so they have to recall them quickly, not rely on counting up. To print these off at home, they are on our Year 3 page under 'Blogs' but you need to click on 'see all blogs' as they are further down the page.

In maths this week we are starting to look at measurements and shape. This will include measuring in mm, cm and m, drawing and describing 2D shapes and beginning to measure perimeter.

In English, we are using our drama experiences to write a diary of Grendel. We will also be encouraging the children to 'read as a writer' which means that we'll be looking at how other authors create effect in their writing. Please encourage your child to 'magpie' any good language, similes, sentence openers, etc when they are reading at home and jot them down in their planner.

Tomorrow afternoon we have John Bishop visiting our school following an assembly last week about aspirations. We are all very excited to be meeting such an inspirational man and we're ready with lots of interesting questions to ask him!

Our trip to the Snow Queen is on Tuesday afternoon. We anticipate to be back at school before 5:30 as previously stated so please keep checking the website for updates.
