A fabulous week in Year 3!
This week, the main focus in Year 3 was ‘Children’s Mental Health’. The theme this year was ‘my voice matters’. The theme was about empowering young people by equipping them with tools to express themselves and look after their mental health and wellbeing. We discussed what matters most to us and shared our ideas.
In English, we wrote our very own lost narratives, we used the most amazing descriptions of how our characters felt. We wrote in great detail, adding personal responses to the surroundings, using varied sentence structures; short sentences for impact alongside complex sentences to give more detail. They were all absolutely amazing!
In Maths, we continued our unit on measuring in millimetres, centimetres, and metres. We had to match items to the correct measurements then we challenged ourselves by working out equivalent lengths and comparing lengths. We had to remember that there were 10mm in 1 cm and 100cm in 1m. We reflected on our learning by explaining how to convert equivalent lengths.
In Computing, we created posters to celebrate Safer Internet Day. Safer Internet Day is the UK’s biggest celebration of online safety. Each year an online issue or theme is explored.
- Young people’s perspective on new and emerging technology.
- Using the internet to make change for the better.
- The changes young people want to see online.
- The things that can influence and change the way young people think, feel and act online and offline.
In Forest School, we did a sit spot mindfulness activity to encourage peace and connect with nature. We practised breathing space meditation, which is a quick way to step out of auto-pilot, whereby we become aware of our thoughts and emotions that are currently driving our moods and behaviours. It was a super effective way of practising self-awareness and self-management, the key components of emotional intelligence and mental health. Once we harnessed the power of our breath and body we calmed our minds and then explored our wonderful forest school area.
In Spanish, we revised the numbers we have previously learnt. We then recapped on musical intsrument vocabulary: el piano, el violin, el arpa, el triangulo, el clarinete, la bateria, la trompeta, la guitarra, la flauta, los cimbalos. We then learnt how to say 'I play + instrument in spanish. Finally, we played a little game, we listened to the spanish version and we had to guess the English.
Toco la bateria = I play the drum. Toco la trompeta = I play the trumpet.
In RE, we researched Mother Teresa. In 1946 Mother Teresa decided to spend her life helping the sick and the poor. She studied nursing and started working in the slums. In 1948 she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious order of women dedicated to serving the poor. Mother Teresa led the order for nearly 50 years. We discovered that Mother Teresa was a humanitarian. This means she did things to help out other people. Her entire life was fully devoted to helping the poor, the sick, the needy, and the helpless.
In PE, we recapped and developed dribbling skills and looked at how to shield the ball. We then practised passing before playing matches to consolidate our skills from this half term.
We have a new pet in Year Three, his name is Pupkin and he will hopefully be visiting your home for the weekend over the coming weeks. Please fill in a diary entry all about your weekend together. You could draw pictures or add photographs, we would love to hear all about Pupkin's adventures with you all.
Just a few reminders for next week:
- Your child needs to bring a small inexpensive toy to sketch on .
- Two small tea bag sized boxes (one slightly larger than the other) to make Tudor houses.
- There will be a toy sale on Friday next week, please bring any unwanted toys/teddies into school on Monday please.
We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
The Year Three Team.
