Year 3 w.b: 4.624

Date: 7th Jun 2024 @ 2:21pm

An amazing first week back in Year 3, filled with describing the properties of 3D shapes, celebrating each others differences and figuring out if spaghetti grows on trees.

In Maths, we have been revising time, the minute hand and the hour hand on an analogue clock tell us what the time is.  We have also been learning to recognise and describe 3D shapes.  3D shapes have three dimensions - length, width and depth. We discovered that 3D shapes have different properties:   Faces - A face is a flat surface on a 3D shape. For example a cube has 6 faces.  Edges - An edge is where two faces meet. For example a cube has 12 edges.  Vertices - A vertex is a corner where edges meet (the plural is vertices). For example a cube has 8 vertices.

In English, we began our new unit ‘The Return’. A beautifully illustrated book about a little girl. Failing to get the attention of her busy father, a lonely girl turns back to a fantastic world for friendship and adventure. It's her third journey into the enticing realm of kings and emperors, castles and canals, exotic creatures and enchanting landscapes.  We had to read a short passage and then try and change the mood from a calm piece of writing to a strange or scary piece.  We had to really think about our vocabulary choices to make our writing effective.

In Computing, we began our E-Safety unit.  E-Safety means making sure that the ways which we use the internet, mobile phones or social media to communicate are safe. There are lots of ways to communicate including pictures, videos and messages.  We learnt an E-Safety rap and busted our best dance moves to the beat, it was such fun!  Mrs Taylor then asked us if we thought spaghetti was grown on trees and we all said ‘no’.  We then watched a Panorama film which showed spaghetti being harvested from trees in Switzerland.  We immediately changed our minds and agreed that indeed it was harvested from trees.  It was in fact a hoax but many people believed it, it goes to show that the internet can influence our thoughts.

In R.E we looked at the Christian values service, compassion and sharing and read the stories of Joseph and Pharoah's dreams and Ruth and Naomi.  We enjoyed learrning the different ways we can share and show compassion to others, by saving produce and giving to those who have less than us.

In PSHE, we learnt about differences.  Although some people may look the same or do the same things, we all have differences too.  Respecting differences is about showing kindness to all people, no matter how different they are from you.

In PE, we enjoyed an afternoon of short and long distance running and learning how to throw the javelin, ready for an athletics competition.

In music we have been rehearsing our pieces for our concert with Mrs Landon.  We enjoyed singing and playing our instruments.  Our performances will blow you away, we are performing a song that has definitely stood the test of time and we are gonna rise up to the challenge of our rivals.  We can’t wait to show you!

Let the weekend roll in with happiness and joy.
