Year 3 blog week beginning 19th September
Date: 23rd Sep 2022 @ 5:34pm
We have had a super fortnight in Year 3! I want to start by saying thank you for all of your support with reading and homework at home. I hope you are getting along well with the new CGP books. We enjoyed self-marking these as a class on Monday. We will write in the page numbers in our planners and new spellings every Monday. An accelerated reader quiz has been completed and children now have an up to date book related to their reading level- we will record this on page 6 of the planners this year: the notes page.
Maths
We have continued to look at place value, learning about the value of the columns in three digit numbers such as 365. We have been adding 100s, 10s and 1s to 3 digit numbers, comparing 3 digit numbers and showing these on number lines.
English
We have enjoyed exploring our vehicle text, the Rhythm of the Rain. We have been using dictionaries to find the meanings of new words, writing sentences with similes and expanded noun phrases in, as well as using prepositions and apostrophes. Next week, we will be planning and writing a setting description. In spelling sessions, we have been exploring the –ness suffix. This week we looked at words that end in y such as silly, which becomes silliness- we drop the y and add I, before adding ness. In guided reading we have been enjoying reading the Princess and the Pea and the Princess’ Blankets. We have been reading out loud for fluency, finding evidence in the text to answer questions and then been answering lots of different questions related to the story.
Other areas of learning
In PE, we have enjoyed a netball and a football lesson- our focuses in both sports were passing and the children have progressed well in both sports and showed proficiency passing. In art this week, we have been learning about the life of Claude Monet and have been practising skills related to his paintings. In RE the children have enjoyed learning about God and have been particularly fond of singing with Mrs Tice.
We have enjoyed exploring the forest area in our Forest School session- the children enjoyed making train tracks, engines and trains which were linked to their history lesson with Mrs Pirie. In Science, we have been learning about forces and enjoying experiments related to friction. On Friday, in music, we have been learning about beat and rhythm and the children were introduced to reading music and practising this with their instruments. We have been very excited to learn how to play the clarinet, saxophone and trumpet.
