Year 2 WC 28th September 2020
Date: 2nd Oct 2020 @ 9:50pm
In maths this week we have been comparing and ordering numbers to 100. We encourage the children to explain how they have ordered the numbers using mathematical language, for example, saying whether they have looked at the tens column or the ones column and why. We then focused on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s which is what I'd like them to practise for homework. I believe that when I set a link to a game on My Maths it can sometimes disappear so I'll pop it on here too. The link this week is
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/paint-the-squares
This takes you to a hundred square (make sure you exit full screen and click on numbers 1-100). The number square is really useful for colouring the squares and asking the children to spot the patterns, e.g. noticing that the twos end in 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8; that the fives end in 0 or 5 and then tens always end in 0.
Challenge ideas:
- count backwards as well as forwards.
- spot which numbers are said in both 2s and 10s, or 2s and 5s for example.
- try starting at a different number rather than 0 and ask 'what do you notice?' The number square is great for helping them to spot patterns like this.
- We will be moving on to counting in 3s next week so you could begin to practise counting in 3s too.
In English we have started a new text, Jim and the Beanstalk, which the children are really enjoying. In our hook lesson, the children found a letter from the giant thanking Jim for some glasses, teeth and a wig. They had some wonderful predictions about what could have happened in the story. We wrote a letter back to the giant and then wrote some character descriptions about what he looked like and what his personality was like. Next week we'll go on to start writing our own version of the story.
In RE we learnt about the parable of the Good Samaritan. The children role-played the story and discussed what the story was teaching us: that God expects Christians to care for others and everyone should be treated equally. This also made us think about our theme in collective worship where we have been looking at inspirational people who have made a difference in others' lives. The children then thought about ways they could show people that they care.
In outdoor learning we learnt about Victorian toys. Please check out the gallery on our class page for photos!
In PSHE we have looked at the story of Rough Ryan who liked to play rough and often ended up hurting his friends. He made everyone round him feel a little bit scared and worried. The children came up with some great suggestions as to how they could play nicely on the playground and also some ways that they could resolve minor issues themselves.
The children had a very exciting DT lesson today as they were practising their sewing skills. They have been designing their own puppet and thinking about how to join materials together. Today they threaded their own needles and then used binca to practise a running stitch.
Have a lovely weekend
