Year 2 WC 21st September 2020

Date: 25th Sep 2020 @ 10:35pm

On Tuesday this week we had our Victorians Day. We began by looking at our school building spotting Victorian features and discussing how it had changed and why. The children noticed the original red brick and we talked about how they had big windows to let lots of light in and to keep the rooms ventilated. The children were very interested to hear about what school was like during Victorian times and had some fantastic questions they wanted to find the answers to. We learnt about the importance of the three Rs and the Bible, and that boys and girls had different lessons. Boys would do woodwork and learn skills they could use, whereas girls would learn to cook, sew and do laundry. They were very shocked at how strict Victorian school was as children weren't allowed to ask questions, had to sit with a straight back and the cane was used for all kinds of punishments. We did our phonics lesson on slate boards and used chalk. Then we had a wonderful lesson baking Victorian biscuits.

In English we have been focusing on settings, using noun phrases to describe and beginning to learn how to use commas in a list.

In maths we have been using a place value chart to represent numbers and then comparing objects and numbers using greater than and less than. It is fantastic to see the children's confidence in maths improving as they're gaining a greater understanding of numbers to 100. I have set another game on My Maths this week. When you open this week's task, there should be  link which takes you to an ordering game. You can access it here if you have any problems: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/caterpillar-ordering

In PSHE we are looking at what it means to be a good friend. We read a story about Blurtout Bertha who says unkind things without thinking. We discussed why she might have said these things and the effect her words had on her friends. Each week we'll be reading a different story which the children can relate to and we can refer to the characters in class if and when friendship issues arise.

I hope you have a lovely weekend
