Year 2 w/b 8th November
Date: 14th Nov 2021 @ 4:10pm
It has been another wonderful week in Year Two. I have been so proud of each and every one of the children for their excellent attitude and effort across all areas of their learning this week.
This week, the children were introduced to our first ‘Send for a Superhero’ text map, corresponding to our model text – a letter from Brad 40 to request assistance from Extremely Boring Man. On Monday, we explored some of the interesting vocabulary in the model text: urgently, request, assistance, disastrous, cruel, merciless, forceful, repetitive, desperately. We explored the definitions of each word and used the words in some sentences to demonstrate our understanding in context. Across Tuesday and Wednesday, we explored the structural and language features of a letter. We identified parts of a letter (address, date, greeting, why you’re writing, main idea and who it’s from) and then used colours to annotate the following features: exclamation marks, conjunctions, questions, lists of three, expanded noun phrases, similes, contractions. On Thursday and Friday, we planned our own letters, using our own creative ideas. The children designed a variety of exciting superheroes and villains; I can’t wait to read these wonderful letters next week.
I have been so proud of the children’s effort and aspiration in maths this week. We have been focusing on column addition, with the added step of exchanging and then ‘carrying a ten’. By the end of the week, the children were experts at using this method and could independently apply their learning to a range of Power Maths questions. Next week, we will focus on column subtraction involving exchanging or ‘borrowing’. We will continue to recap column addition and subtraction throughout the year.
In science this week, the children were learning about the spread of germs. They covered their hands in glitter to represent the germs and observed how the glitter spread throughout the classroom as they touched a variety of objects. This was followed by a discussion about the best way to keep our hands clean.
On Monday, we enjoyed our first PE lesson of the half term. This half term, our focus is ‘target games’ and, this week, this was in the context of throwing skills, involving a variety of games to practise these skills. We particularly enjoyed throwing the beanbag into the hula hoop, moving it further away each time to increase the challenge.
On Tuesday, we completed our geography learning for the Autumn term, recapping the seven continents and five oceans. We used atlases to complete our own world maps and particularly enjoyed singing the continents song! We are looking forward to moving on to our history learning.
In our PSHE HeartSmart lesson, we focused on celebrating the ways in which we are unique. We drew a self-portrait and, around this, wrote about: things we our good at; things that we love; words to describe ourselves; things that we are learning; our favourite thing about ourselves.
This week, we have also completed a variety of activities as we continued to think about the importance of Remembrance. In Forest School, we created our own poppy crosses, applying the lashing skills that we learnt last week. We also created some beautiful poppy watercolour paintings.
Year Two have worked very hard this week and I am very proud of them all. Next week, we will be starting our Nativity; we are very excited! I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
