Year 2 w/b 6th December
Date: 10th Dec 2021 @ 5:43pm
What a wonderful week! It filled me with joy and pride to see all of the children perform so wonderfully in their Nativity and we were so glad to be able to share this with you.
In English, we finished our superhero narratives, following the structure: opening, build-up, problem, resolution and ending. I have very much enjoyed reading all about these vicious villains and mighty superheroes! The children worked very hard to include descriptive devices and ambitious vocabulary in their stories – well done Year Two authors.
In maths, we were introduced to multiplication by making groups i.e. 4 x 5 is the same as 4 groups of 5. We were able to draw 4 circles and add 5 dots into each group. We could then count in 5s to find the total or count each individual dot if necessary. This supported us to complete our maths assessments – a wonderful job Year Two mathematicians.
On Wednesday, we had our Mutliflex session, enjoying a variety of challenges to test our fitness. We then completed an indoor Forest School session, due to the very wet weather. Mr Simmons guided us through some wonderful artwork; the children drew a Christmas picture before using leaves to add texture.
This week, our HeartSmart focus was to notice the difference in our heart rate after physical activity. We first learnt how to check our pulse. Then, we completed a minute of quickly jumping/marching/bending and stretching before checking our pulses again – what a difference! We learnt that our hearts need to work harder when we exercise to pump the blood to our muscles. This means that our heart rate is quicker after exercise.
In history, we have enjoyed learning more about the Victorians. On Thursday, we considered the different ways in which we find out about the past (books, internet, newspaper, visiting places, museums, asking an expert, looking at artefacts, looking at pictures etc.). This inspired us to become historians, working as a team to conduct research. By looking at books, internet research, artefacts and pictures, we were able to find out about Victorian schools, focusing on: teachers, lessons, classrooms, equipment, uniform, rules, punishments and the number of children in a class. We were particularly shocked to learn about the harsh punishments which could be earned for things such as writing with your left hand! On Friday, we once again worked in teams to find out about Victorian children’s jobs. Each group filmed an informative video where children were interviewed in role as chimney sweeps, factory workers, coal miners, farmers, domestic servants, and children who had street jobs.
On Friday morning, we were very excited to welcome visitors from Jam Coding. The children were able to work in pairs, following a guided process to produce their own games! As the photos show, this was a most enjoyable treat.
There are a few dates to be aware of next week:
Monday – Theatre Trip
Wednesday – Christmas party, Christmas lunch, Forest School
Thursday – Victorian Day
Thank you ever so much for all of your support this week with costumes, drop-offs and being part of the wonderful audiences! I am so proud of each and every one of the children for their hard work, both on the stage and within the classroom.
I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.
