Year 2 w/b 3rd May
Date: 8th May 2022 @ 4:04pm
The highlight of our week was our trip to Nantwich! Please see the Nantwich blog (below) for more information and lots of photographs.
Our English learning for the week was inspired by our trip to Nantwich – we will be writing a recount of our trip. On Tuesday, we were introduced to the genre. We explored examples of recounts to identify key features and create a whole class toolkit. We then ‘zoomed in’ on one of the features, writing in the past tense, to complete a grammar task involving changing present tense verbs to past tense verbs. On Thursday, we analysed an example recount to recognise some of these features and discuss their importance. On Friday, we recapped our trip and ordered some photographs chronologically. This helped us to create a plan for our recounts. I am looking forward to the writing stage of this process next week.
Our spelling focus this week was ‘words ending in -le’. We learnt that if a word has two syllables and ends in the ‘l’ sound, the sound is most likely spelt ‘le’ (e.g. purple, little, handle). We did spot two exceptions – rectangle and triangle. Our red words of the week were: beautiful, every, many, walk, behind, improve.
In maths, we completed our ‘length and height’ unit. We were able to order lengths and apply our learning within word problems. On Friday, we enjoyed our first ‘time’ lesson. Our focus was ‘o’clock’ and ‘half past’ times. Next week, we will look at quarter past/to and introduce time to five minutes. We will then begin to recap our Year Two maths learning, focusing on the four operations and fractions and applying this arithmetic knowledge to word problems. Our work with time will develop and continue after the half term.
In history, we were introduced to the Great Fire of Nantwich in preparation for our trip. We also investigated the factors that helped the fires to last for so long and spread so quickly.
In RE, we continued our work with baptism. In this lesson, we focused on the significance of promises as we considered the promises that we make, obstacles that we may face and how Jesus could help us to overcome them.
On Thursday, our HeartSmart learning focused on our emotions. We named emotions, talked about how they felt and described times we had experienced each emotion. We emphasised that evert feeling is valid – it’s what we do with it that matters. When we show people the real things we feel and think, we are letting them see and know the real us. This is important for friendship and trust. If we feel sad or mad, we can talk to someone that we trust about it.
On Friday, we enjoyed our last session with Cheshire Cricket. After practising our throwing skills, we participated in a whole class game of cricket rounders. What a lot of fun we had!
Have a lovely weekend.
