Year 2 w/b 26th September

Date: 29th Sep 2022 @ 5:13pm

We have thoroughly enjoyed another great week in Year Two.

This week in English, to demonstrate our innovation skills, we have been writing our own finding narratives, which involve our own: magical creature, characters, exciting setting, problem and solution. Children have worked very hard to complete their fabulous stories and are looking forward to editing and publishing them next week. I have really enjoyed reading their stories as they have progressed and I think it is fantastic how everyone’s stories are very different. We continued our learning outside in Forest School where children made Bog Babies out of clay, pinecones and leaves.

In PSHE this week, we looked at ‘My Happy Mind’ where we discussed what our brains look like and how it helps us. We then revisited the three parts of our brain, known as Team H-A-P (hippocampus, amygdala and prefrontal cortex). Next, we looked at how our brain grows, what neuroplasticity is and how Team H-A-P can help us be our best self. Finally, we drew a picture of our brains in our journal and listed ways in which our brain had helped us that day. We then noted down something that we used to find quite difficult when we were younger and discussed how neuroplasticity has helped us to get better at this.

In science this week, we discussed the question ‘How do you look after a baby?’ and created a list of questions that we were eager to find out. As a mum herself, Mrs Oldham very kindly answered these questions in an interview and this helped us to distinguish the differences between what children need to survive and what a baby needs to survive. We all agreed that babies have very different needs to us! On Wednesday in our geography lesson, we located Brereton on a map and tried our very best to draw this into our books. We learned that when we make our maps, we need to remember our map checklist: write our map title, draw our symbols, make a key and find our key features. These maps were fantastic and I am really looking forward to seeing children design a map of their very own made-up town next week.

In maths, we have continued to look at our Power Maths unit, ‘Numbers to 100.’ We have been looking at writing numbers to 100 in expanded form, 10s and 1s on a number line to 100 and estimating numbers on a number line.

This week we continued to be wonderful gymnasts in our PE lesson. We revisited different shapes and ways to travel before practising how to land like gymnasts. After this, we demonstrated balances and jumped onto and off equipment. What fantastic gymnasts we have in Year Two!

Next week marks the start of our harvest preparations. This year we will be supporting the Brereton food pantry (based at Revd Sandi’s vicarage) and Chance Changing Lives which is a homeless charity supporting families in Crewe and Nantwich. If possible, we are asking for donations of non-perishable goods and hygiene items which can be sent into school from next week. The Year 6 Ethos Council will help us launch our harvest giving for 2022 in Monday’s Collective Worship.

We shall also be holding a short Harvest Service for Parents and Grandparents of children in EYFS and Years 1 and 2, next Friday 7th October at 10am, at St Oswald’s Church. The children will be singing some harvest songs and each class will present something to the service. If you would like to walk down to the Church with us, we shall be leaving about 9.30am from school so please wait just outside school and it will be lovely to see you. Once in Church, the children will sit at the front and parents are invited to sit towards the back. We expect the service to last no longer than 30 minutes.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask via email, Dojo or through a note in reading diaries.

I hope that you have a fantastic weekend.
