Year 2 w/b 25th November 2024

Date: 29th Nov 2024 @ 4:04pm

In our collective worship this week we looked at the picture painted by Leonardo DaVinci of  Angel Gabriel talking to Mary. We talked about how the light is used around the figures and what they could have been saying regarding the news of the baby.

Spellings

Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:

dreaming, sleeping, painted, shouted, talked, played, hunter, singer, what, when

Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.

RE  - Why was Jesus birth such good news?

We took part in a role play to understand what Mary, Joseph and the Shepherds mights have said when the Angel brought them the good news of baby Jesus.  We listened to Handel's Messiah to hear the angel’s words that the choir sung and The Annunciation by the following artists; Angel Zarraga, Henry Ossawa Tanner, He Qi, Nicole Dixon, Liviu Dumitrescu and Patricia Brintle was used as a visual link to also help us to think about what they may have said.

PSHE – My Special People.

The children have been identifying who is special to them and explaining some ways why those people are special to them. The children drew a picture of themselves and their special person and also thought about what they could do to help their special person.

English

Still using The Night Gardener as out Vehicle Text we have been looking an example text in the genre of a Diary. The children have been looking at the language used and ensuring that we know the definitions for any new words. The children have been gathering ideas of how to write in first person by taking part in some role play.

Maths

This week our Maths included an extra session with Mr Metcalfe from ‘I See Maths’ who worked with us to develop our problem-solving skills and how to see sharing and grouping problems using pictorial representations. This was along side our maths learning in class where we continue to look at the properties of 3-D shapes.

Science

In Science we continue to look at ways to keep our bodies healthy. This week we have been thinking about the impact of exercise and how movement can support a healthy lifestyle. We completed a range of movement activities and noted the impact then had and changes they made to our bodies including feeling hotter, feeling our hearts pump blood around our bodies more and increased breathing. We set ourselves challenges to increase our physical movement in the school day.

History – Victorian Schools

This week we have been looking for clues that Brereton was a Victorian school (opening in 1830), we looked at school house where the Headmaster used to live and the ‘garage’ where his horse and cart were kept, we found an original fireplace and looked at the size of the windows in year 5 and 6. We found out that the ks2 classrooms today were originally one huge classroom!

We then watched some videos to find out about Victorian jobs for children. We discussed these jobs and imagined ourselves doing these jobs today? We talked about why the children in Victorian times might have had to work.

We are estimating to be back in school at 5pm on Wednesday from the trip to the theatre, we will let you know if it will be any different. All year 2 are to be collected from the main office.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Forrester
