Happy first week back of the summer term and the sun is shining!
Spelling –
Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:
judge, huge, stage, giant, magic, jacket, jump, steak, break, great
Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.
English –
The children have been introduced to the new text for this half term – The King who Banned the Dark. They made their predictions about what would happen in a town where there was no dark at all, only bright light. Predictions can be a tricky thing to be able to come up with an idea of what could happen in the story, e.g. what will the characters do? What could go wrong? What could go right? How does the story end?
Making predictions can be fun, it uses your imagination, why don’t you try making a prediction about any stories you read together by looking at the front cover, reading the blurb or after only reading a few pages, this should help pupils to understand how to make a prediction rather than just a short answer, then you can see if you were close when you have finished the story.
Maths –
Fractions unit has begun this week, starting with the understanding of what a whole and part are, equal and unequal parts and finding and recognising a half. These are good concepts to embed at home – just try chopping cake into equal pieces – or for real impact sharing sweets unequally!
Music – Today we played the notes of b and a in the tune ‘Wet and Windy’ on the recorder.
Art – We completed the final stage of our Hannah Dunnett pictures, adding words from a prayer. Most of us used our school prayer but really impressed with how many children wanted to use words from ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ and knew the words!
PE – In our first Kwik Cricket lesson in Year 2 we were encouraged to control the ball, improve our aim and focussed on constant awareness of the ball. We learnt how to catch a rolling ball and roll it with greater accuracy during the 'tunnels' game. We loved the 'golden egg' game!
Forest School - We started out learning about nocturnal animals in connection to our text 'The King who banned the dark'. Then we started searching for them. This led to some digging and others to painting rocks in the likeness of different minibeasts. Meanwhile some of us looked for different species of bee and others chatted in hammocks.
Have a lovely weekend!
