Year 2 w/b 19th June

Date: 23rd Jun 2023 @ 12:24pm

What a wonderful Sports week we have had! This started on Monday when Year 2 were very excited to have the opportunity to swim during our ‘fun session’. Everybody thought this was great! During lunch times, children have been able to practise and learn new sports such as basketball, dodgeball and cricket. On Wednesday morning Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a rotation of activities: rounders, French cricket, netball and a range of athletic sports involving hurdles, javelins and speed bouncing. We were very impressed by the excellent teamwork skills they demonstrated!

In English this week, we explored our model text ‘The Fantastic Flying Machine’ and looked at a range of new vocabulary (strike, holders, propeller, ground-breaking, take-off, release, old rusty motor, rev the engine, spark the old motor into action, breath-taking views, generates the wind power, lift off the ground, capture the wind, engine will take over). We then used our comprehension skills to draw and label the machine based on the explanation text alone. Finally, we were introduced to the corresponding text map. Later in the week, we became grammar detectives, completing three short grammar-based challenges – using conjunctions in sentences, fixing SPaG mistakes and writing questions. We are looking forward to planning our very own explanation texts next week.

In maths this week, we have started our new unit ‘Statistics’, where we have learning how to:

  • Read and construct tally charts.
  • Interpret data which is presented in tables, and use this data to answer 1- and 2-step problems.
  • Read, construct and interpret block diagrams.

In science, we enjoyed another exciting lesson on our topic ‘Materials’. This week the objective was to observe and record objects made from different materials. The children became material detectives, finding objects in the classroom made from wood, plastic, glass and metal. Next week, we are looking forward to testing a range of materials to see whether they would make a suitable coat.

In geography, we recapped our understanding of human and physical features and the differences between cities and villages. This week, we were exploring two cities: Manchester and Nairobi. After finding out lots about each city, we looked at their features and worked with a partner to classify them as human or physical. This helped us to write about the similarities and differences between the two cities.

In music this week, we continued our learning on our unit ‘Down in the jungle’. Firstly, we played the ‘What’s that sound?’ listening game where children had to guess which percussion instrument had been played. After this, we recapped our song ‘Down in the jungle’ and chose four jungle animals (elephant, snake, crocodile and gorilla). We were then split into four groups and picked out instruments that could be used for each animal, discussing how this could be played. Finally, we started to create an exciting piece of music together. What excellent musicians we have in Year 2! We are looking forward to finishing our piece of music and performing this to Mrs Tice on Monday.

In PE, we continued with athletics. In our lesson, we split up into groups and worked with our friends to move faster and move further in each of the activities. We tried chest pushing a ball to each other and worked hard to improve our scores on the speed bounce station. We loved playing the 'bean' game, our favourite had to be the 'chilli bean'!

In RE, we designed a guide showing how Jews show their love for God in everyday life.

In art, we learned how to create perspective through line and shape and then saw how Lowry creates perspective by trying to find the vanishing points on some of his artwork. It was quite tricky but we soon got the hang of it!

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday for our class photographs.
