Date: 22nd Nov 2024 @ 3:54pm
In our collective worship was based on our value Hope, we shared examples of how we can shine our lights even brighter both in school and at home. If we all shine our lights brightly what a beacon of hope we will be!
Light being a metaphor for good over evil, showing who we are and guiding us on the right path.
Spellings
Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:
above, creative, wings, pencils, dishes, foxes, earring, anymore, school, friend
Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.
RE - Why was Jesus birth such good news?
This week we learnt the story of the angel visiting Zechariah. (Luke 1:5-25) Zechariah had a big surprise! The angel Gabriel told him good news that his wife, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby. (Luke 1:19) However, Zechariah didn’t believe this news so he was unable to talk because he hadn’t trusted God’s word. When the baby was born he was called John and Zechariah was then able to talk again. We learnt that we have to be hopeful and also patient.
We looked at two painting of this story; ‘Archangel Gabriel struck dumb Zachariah’ by Alexandr Ivanov and ‘The Angel Appearing to Zacharias’ by William Blake. We discussed what Zechariah would be saying to the angel in each painting.
English
This week we have been writing a setting description for Grimlock Lane from our text; The Night Gardener. The children will be using all of the writing skills they have been taught over the last two weeks to write in detail, using spelling patterns and sentence structures to be able to write in detail.
Maths
This week we have looked at lines of symmetry on 2-D shapes and how to use lines of symmetry to complete drawings of shapes. We now move on to looking at 3-D ‘solid’ shapes and the mathematical language we use when describing their properties: faces, edges and vertices.
Art
In art we have been transforming the self portraits we made last week into Roy Lichtenstein inspired, pop art self-portraits. This included revisiting the work of the famous artist and looking in detail at how he uses Ben-Day dots in his art work. We then used this skill to add dots and bold lines to our self-portraits to imitate this pop art style.
Science
Our Science this week follows on from last week and we have been observing and recording the results of our ongoing hygiene investigation using bread touched by washed and unwashed hands. We also had a go at completing the experiment that shows how germs are broken down using soap. We recorded our observations and linked this to the importance of hand washing hygiene to keep us healthy
History - To find out about Victorian schools by interpreting information that is represented in different ways.
Our Victorian Day was a great success. We started the day by lining up, boys are girls separately and the teacher checked that the children were clean and respectable before they came into the classroom. On entering the classroom the children had single desks all facing the front and they had to stand in silence while the register was taken, no wriggling aloud or they would have to wear ‘The Wriggler’ sign. The boys were address by their surnames and girls by their first name, all pupils had to call the teacher Ma’am.
The children took part in an arithmetic lessons where they had to chant their times tables, we discussed how differently this is to how we learn today, we all agreed it was much more fun in our modern lessons.
The children also had a go at writing in the Victorian script and they ate (or had a very little taste) of some yummy gruel (porridge oats and water). This was not very popular hehe!
After lunch we got the children busy with the weeks washing, all done by hand using the wash board and dolly. Finally ending the day playing traditional Victorian playground games including marbles and some wooden games.
We finished by feeling grateful for all of our mod-cons today, including central heating and interactive whiteboards.
Thank you for all the chocolate donations for the Christmas Fair.
On Thursday 28th Year Two will be walking to St.Oswalds for our worship, you are welcome to join us, the service starts at 10.30am.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Forrester
