Year 2 w/b 16th January
Date: 20th Jan 2023 @ 11:44am
We have had another great week of learning in Year Two!
Our week began when we played an exciting persuasive game in English: conscience alley. Children who were for Jack going up the beanstalk lined up on one side and children who were against Jack going up stood opposite them to create an alley. As ‘Jack’ walked down the alley, children gave their reasons for or against in an attempt to persuade Jack, focusing on using conjunctions in their reasons. Everybody then wrote their reasons down in full sentences, using the conjunctions. On Tuesday, we began planning our own persuasive letters. Monday’s drama activity had provided plenty of inspiration to plan the reasons why Jack should/shouldn’t climb the beanstalk and I was impressed with the independence demonstrated during this planning stage. These plans were extremely useful as we began our writing process. Within these letters, we have particularly focused on including questions, exclamations and emotive language as we refer directly to Jack in an attempt to persuade. Each letter is extremely convincing! Next week, we will finish our letters, independently editing our writing with purple pens before publishing our work. I look forward to the opportunity for the children to really focus on their handwriting and presentation as they publish their beautiful writing. I am sure that this will be work to be very proud of – well done Year Two!
Our spelling rule this week has been: the igh sound spelt ‘y’. To help us to remember the spelling rule, we have been repeating the following: “If the end of a word sounds like ‘igh’, it is almost always spelt with a ‘y”. These included words such as: reply, butterfly, cry, horrify and fly.
In science, we were all given a selection of bulbs and seeds however we were not told what they were. We then discussed what we knew about these and sorted them in a variety of ways such as by texture, colour and whether they were seeds or bulbs.
In geography, we have been looking at the differences between seasonal and daily weather patterns. We discussed that although we experience daily weather changes during every season, some types of weather are much more likely to occur in certain seasons. After this, we discussed the impact the season and weather has on farming and crops. Next week, we are looking forward to learn where different food comes from, from around the world. If you have any empty food packets that your child could bring to school with them on Tuesday, that would be fantastic!
In maths this week, we have been very excited to start our new topic ‘Money’. We have been looking at the value of different coins and notes and seleting the right combination for a given amount. We then looked at how much money is left over. Finally, we used different combinations of coins and notes to make the same amount of money. For example, to make £25, we could use a £20 note and a £5 note or we could make it using two £10, two £2 and one £1. If you could keep practicing money at home where possible, that would be great!
In PE this week, we practised our football skills, we learnt how to dribble using the inside of our feet and how to control the ball. We played a fun game of 'duck tails' where we had to dribble the ball around whilst protecting our tails. We can't wait for next week!
In RE this week, we have been continuing our learning about forgiveness. We thought about about a time when we had done something wrong (that was quite difficult, as we are all amazing!) then we thought about a time when we forgave someone who had hurt our feelings. We linked our learning to the lines in The Lord's Prayer 'And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.'
We had so much fun in Design and Technology this week, we tasted different pizza toppings and decided which toppings we would like on our pizzas. After much deliberation, the ham and cheese toppings came out on top!
Year Two, you continue to impress us! We hope that you all enjoy a lovely, restful weekend.
