Year 2 w/b 15th May

Date: 19th May 2023 @ 10:52am

Wow, what a very busy week we have had in Year Two!

I am very proud of Year Two’s determination, enthusiasm and resilience as they have endeavoured to ‘show what they know’ this week. They have worked very carefully, using their arithmetic strategies, searching for key words to underline and applying the Year Two spelling rules. What wonderful Year Two learners we have!

Outside of our quizzes, we have worked so very hard in planning and writing our animal non-chronological reports. We have all definitely learned some unusual yet fascinating facts about various animals from each other. I am very much looking forward to reading the finished products next week!

For Mental Awareness Week we have focused on the importance of talking about our feelings to others. Having good mental health means:

  • Looking after our mind just as much as our bodies
  • Finding ways to do things that make us feel better if our minds aren’t feeling so well.
  • Making mental health an important part of our lives

This year the focus for mental health is ‘Anxiety’. When we are anxious, we can feel nervous, overwhelmed, scared, lonely and feel like we have butterflies in our tummies. We agreed we all worry about different things, but it was important not to keep worries to ourselves and talking about worries to a trusted adult or friend can really help.  These are some of the other ways we agreed we could manage our anxiety:

  • Having a good night’s sleep
  • Happy breathing
  • Being active and enjoying time outside
  • Spending time with family and friends

We also reflected on our learning in ‘My Happy Mind’ and reminded ourselves about the fact if we want the 3 parts of our brain to work together well, we needed an attitude of gratitude, where we believe to achieve and enjoy strength spotting in ourselves and others. Finally, we read the book Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival, which reminded us that worries like nothing more than being hidden. When we talk about and share our worries, our worries are reduced, and we can cope with them more easily.

In forest school, we spent time relaxing and enjoying being with our friends in our wonderful woodland area. Some of us made juggling sticks and some of us used the clay to create animals.

In maths this week, we have had our problem-solving hats on. We have been looking at:

  • Solving money problems using a variety of addition and subtraction strategies.
  • Making links between calculations to calculate unknown quantities, based on similarities and differences between the parts and the wholes.
  • Efficient methods to complete calculations using a 100 square.  We practised counting on and back in 10s, then in 1s to find the answer.

In RE, we created our very own wordle style artwork, remembering everything we have learnt in previous weeks about the Holy Spirit.  They were all pretty amazing!

In DT we started to design our moving monster heads and decided which linkage system would work best.  We also asked our friends to vote for their favourite design, focusing on colour, pattern and overall plan.

We are very much looking forward to our exciting trip to Nantwich Museum on Tuesday!

We hope you have a restful weekend.
