Year 2 w/b 14th October 2024

Date: 18th Oct 2024 @ 5:23pm

Welcome to another busy week in Year Two!

In our collective worship this week, we read the parable of the vine and branches where Jesus said:  I am the vine; you are the branches from John 15 1-15. We thought about the vine and if it is healthy and looked after it will always bear fruit. Then we thought about our school being the vine and the children being the fruit and how we can support each other to flourish and grown.

RE  - Do people of all faiths have holy books?

We have looked at the Torah Scroll and the pupils discussed why the Torah scroll is so important to Jews, when and where the Torah is read and why a Yad is used.

The pupils also learnt about the Sikh scripture which is a book called the Guru Granth Sahib. The pupils found it very interesting to learn how the Guru Granth Sahib is treated throughout each day. To finish the lesson we looked at the similarities and differences between the Bible, the Torah, The Qur’an and the Guru Granth Sahib.

English

The children concluded their letter to Tom this week with some excellent words of advice for him to continue his journey down the river safely. We have also been working on adverbs and how to use them in a sentence.

Maths

In Maths we have been subtracting from a ten and subtracting across ten. We then moved on to looking at speedy recall of ten more and ten less than any given two-digit number. We could use concrete resources such as base ten to add ten or take away ten, noting that the ones stay the same. Progressing on from concrete resources we can use a hundred square and can clearly identify ten more (down one square) or ten less (up one square) to find the answer. Speedy recall using mental arithmetic comes as the final part of this progression and is something to work towards at home.

Geography

The children have finished designing and labelling their own designs for a town. They used a key to ensure that their maps could be read easily and ensured that they had both human and natural (physical) features in their towns. Please see the photos to see what a fabulous job they have done.

DT

We have now completed our wonderful hand puppets and have been carefully evaluating the making process. We can’t wait to share these with you next week. If you can’t wait until then, take a look at the photos below.

Science

Many thanks for the support in completing food diaries at home over the past week. We have been busy using these to group the foods we have been eating into the five scientific food groups. We were then able to look at, and interpret, the information we gathered in our tally charts. We then made a tally chart and bar chart to represent favourite foods in Year Two. It was great to see everyone make links between the data and see themselves as scientists.

PE

This week we have completed our gymnastics unit of work and used our lesson this week to create gymnastic sequences with a partner or in a small group. These sequences brought together the skills we have been building over the past six lessons.

The children have taken part in three sessions with Will this week, working on the Art of Brilliance. They have learnt how to be more positive and how to use their positive mindset in their lives.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, we look forward to seeing you next week at our parent consultations on Wendesday.
