Year 2 w/b 13th January 2025
Date: 17th Jan 2025 @ 4:28pm
Worship this week we shared the story of the Jesus’ Escape into Egypt, Matthew 2:13-15, and it got us thinking about refugees. We wondered how it must have feel to be in such danger, what people were able to take with them and wondered what they hoped and prayed for as they left. We discussed how we might feel. Then thought about refugees today and ought about how we could help.
Spellings
Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:
play, away, enjoy, soy, rule, mute, use, true, flew, again
Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.
RE Day
We shared the story of The Ten Lepers (Luke 17:11-19). Working in groups the children retold the story using drama, mime or dance. Using movement and facial expressions to interpret the hurt and rejection felt by the lepers. Then changing these expressions to reflect the new feelings of the people after they were healed. We discussed; What was their life like before? What was their life like after they were healed?
Why did Jesus stop and help them? All children then wrote a thank you letter to Jesus from the leper who came back to say thank you.
We also learnt the story of Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10:46-52, Luke 18:35-43)
Jesus was leaving Jericho, followed by a large crowd, on his way to Jerusalem when he came across a blind beggar called Bartimaeus.
Bartimaeus calls out “Jesus, Son of David. Take pity on me!”
Bartimaeus’ words show his faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Jews believed that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David.
Jewish people also believed that illness and disability were a punishment from God because the person had committed sins. Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was told by the crowd to be quiet. In their opinion, he did not deserve to have Jesus listen to him.
Bartimaeus refused to be quiet and shouted all the louder as he wanted to meet Jesus. Jesus on hearing his insistence called him over and asked him what he wanted. Bartimaeus asked Jesus to restore his sight. Jesus heals him and says, “Your faith has made you well.”
The children wrote a newspaper report telling the news of Bartimaeus and how he was healed by Jesus.
English – The Bog Baby
The children have been analysing the text looking for structural and language features that the author uses and discussed why these features were used. The pupils then finished the week by designing their own creature in preparation for writing their own Finding Narrative next week. New creatures were also made out of clay in forest school too, check out the pictures below.
Maths
We continue to think about using and applying money in everyday contexts including finding change from given amounts. This uses our subtraction skills and often the speedy recall of number bonds. Continuing to handle money frequently outside of school and talking about the values of each coin will support and develop this understanding.
Science
This week we have been using the scientific skill of observation. We have looked at, and compared, seeds and bulbs. Now is the time when we might spot new life starting to emerge from the ground. I wonder if anyone can spot the first snowdrops when out walking over the coming weekend and weeks ahead.
Geography
The children Identified the weather patterns of the UK and the impact on farming and crops.
Our discussions included: What are the seasons? What season are we in? Can you think of words to describe the weather in the United Kingdom during this season? Is it always sunny in summer? Is it always snowy in winter? Although we experience daily weather changes during every season, some types of weather are much more likely to occur in certain seasons.
PE
We are are now working on the unit Football FUNdamentals and will be developing ball control skills over the coming weeks. This week we looked at stopping the ball with the inside, outside and sole of our feet. There are some great action shots this week showing these skills in action!
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Lindersen, Mrs Forrester and Mrs Mitchell
