Year 2 w/b 11th November 2024
Date: 15th Nov 2024 @ 4:46pm
Year 2 began the week thinking about why we buy a Poppy and sharing stories for Remembrance. We went to the Community area to hold our minutes silence and we were very proud of how respectful all of our children were.
In our collective worship this week we talking about Anti- Bullying week, how we can look out for signs and help our peers. How we should let our lights shine through and always be the best version of ourselves by sharing kindness.
Spellings
Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:
have, give, spends, thanks, catches, splashes, playground, bedroom, some, come.
Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.
RE - Why was Jesus birth such good news?
We discussed how God communicates with us? How does God send news/messages? The children went on a ‘card trail’ to find out what was Good News and what was Bad News in the Nativity Story.
In the Old Testament God speaks through prophets and dreams however, in the nativity story his main mode of communication is the angels. We concluded that Jesus is what connects all of the good news in this story.
PSHE – My Special People.
The children identified people who are special to them and explained some of the ways those people are special to them. It was lovely to hear all the ideas they shared as to why different people were special to them in different ways.
English
Continuing with the Night Gardener the children have been looking at how the Example text is structured and what language features it has. The children have spotted these features and learnt how to write their own sentences that include these features e.g similes, questions, apostrophes, exclamation, adverbs, suffixes -ful and -less and expanded noun phrases.
Maths
We have been looking at 2-D shapes and their properties. This has included naming common 2-D shapes, counting sides and vertices and drawing these shapes using a ruler and squared paper. Observing and talking about 2-D shapes you see in your everyday environments will support these concepts – how many sides? How many vertices? How do you know it is a ____?
Art
We have been looking in detail at the work of Roy Lichtenstein and his part in the pop art movement. We then created our own self portraits that we will use as a starting point to creating portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein over the coming weeks.
Science
Our focus is now on hygiene and how to keep our bodies healthy. This week we began an investigation to observe what happens to a slice of bread when touched with either clean or dirty hands. We talked through the scientific process including how to keep it a fair test and how to make predictions. Over the coming weeks we will observe and record our findings. We also observed a demonstration to highlight the importance of washing hands. We will carry out this investigation ourselves next week but it looked like magic – ask your children what happened to the ground pepper in water when touched by clean or dirty hands!
History - To find out about Victorian schools by interpreting information that is represented in different ways.
We discussed that we will be historians, investigating a variety of information to find out about Victorian schools. Brereton Primary School was built in 1829 so would have been a ‘Victorian school’. We will be finding out what it would have been like to attend school at this time.
First, we talked about how we can find out about the past (e.g. books, internet, visiting historical places, asking someone who was there, looking at pictures, looking at artefacts, newspaper articles etc.) Then in groups, they researched classroom and equipment; lessons; number and age of children in a class; teachers; uniform; rules and punishment using books, artefacts, photographs, printed information from online, first-hand accounts, newspaper articles etc. We concluded the lesson having a debate about whether Victorian school were better than our modern school today.
It is Victorian Day on the 19th, please come dressed up and ready for a day of ‘living history’.
On Thursday 21st Year Two will be walking to St.Oswalds for our worship, you are welcome to join us, the service starts at 10.30am.
Friday 22nd November is non-uniform, donations of chocolate are requested in preparation for the chocolate tombola at the Christmas Fair.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Lindersen and Mrs Forrester
