Year 2 w/b 11th July
Date: 15th Jul 2022 @ 5:11pm
The final full week of Year 2 has been completed and what a lovely week it has been. We have been working towards our Sports Day throughout the week and it was such a joy to share this with parents and carers this morning. Year 2 worked hard and showed wonderful sportsmanship and compassion as they supported their friends across the Key Stage. I hope that you enjoy these photos of the sprinting, javelin throwing, egg and spoon race, holiday bag packing race and, of course, team spirit. Congratulations on a fantastic Sports Day Year 2!
On Monday, we finished our final maths task in the Power Maths book. This involved reading scales of different intervals to work out the temperature. In our Power Maths books, we have two blank units of lessons – problem solving and position and direction. This is because we have enjoyed several practical maths lessons to complete this learning! The problem solving was completed as we worked towards our ‘prove what you know’ booklets and the position and direction has been most recently completed in Forest School. Last week, we worked on quarter turns, half turns and full turns, both clockwise and anti-clockwise. This week, we used this knowledge, as well as positional and directional language (e.g. forwards, backwards, left, right) to give directions to guide a partner. Then we enjoyed some free time to explore Forest School.
In PE, Multiflex completed our fitness assessments. The children impressed the Multiflex teachers with their improvement, which is no surprise after their fantastic performance in this morning’s Sports Day.
On Tuesday, Year 2 enjoyed a day of art with Mrs Taylor, focusing on the work of L.S. Lowry. The first focus of the day was understanding perspective and this involved some handy hints from Mrs Taylor for how to draw a street just like Lowry. The children worked on recreating some of Lowry’s pieces, using chalk pastels to mimic his colour schemes. We then began to create our own pieces: ‘Brereton at play’. Using the perspective techniques, the children drew their pieces, including local places such as the school, the pub and the church. Again, chalk pastels were used to add colour. On another piece of paper, we used chalk pastels to create a sky. Next, we cut around the top of our picture and stuck this onto our sky, creating the beginnings of a collage. Next week, we will add some objects in the foreground.
Wednesday involved a lot of science as the children finished their work with materials. The highlight of the day was predicting which materials would protect an egg, before wrapping an egg in each material and dropping it from a window. It was lucky that Mr Cotton used hard-boiled eggs as not all of the eggs remained unharmed! In the afternoon, the children conducted another scientific test. This time, they had to test a variety of materials to see if they could be squashed, bent, twisted or stretched. Thank you Mr Cotton for all of your wonderful, exciting science lessons this year!
We have thoroughly enjoyed our final geography lessons this week. This week, we focused on comparing Tattenhall and Njoro. We are fortunate to have a link with St Lwanga Catholic Primary School in Njoro, Kenya so it was very interesting to learn more about this area. It was also wonderful to see how much the children had noticed and understood about the geography of Tattenhall from completing the Millennium Mile during our residential. This helped us to write our own quizzes which included questions about Tattenhall and Njoro. We can’t wait to test our friends next week!
This week, it has also been our SRE week. First, we explored the concept of gender stereotypes and challenging them. E.g. “pink is a girl colour”, “only boys like sports”, “only girls like dolls”. This was such a respectful and interesting discussion and it was wonderful to listen to children’s answers. Next, we explored the differences between male and female animals. Finally, we described the physical differences between males and females and ensured that we could name the different body parts.
I hope that you all enjoy a wonderful weekend and I can’t wait to see you all again on Monday for our final three days together. Monday and Tuesday will be very hot so please see the newsletter for more information about non-uniform on these days and break time arrangements.
Many thanks,
Miss Witham
