Year 2 w/b 10th October
Date: 14th Oct 2022 @ 4:34pm
We have had a lovely week in Year Two.
We started the week off learning all about verbs and adverbs. To learn about verbs, we played an exciting guessing game. One of the children would secretly select a verb from the basket (e.g. write, dance, jump, clean) and then act this out. The children would then guess the verb, using the phrase “I think the verb is…”. We then added adverbs into our game. The children would all begin acting out a verb (e.g. dance) and then would modify their actions according to the selected adverb (e.g. dance quickly, slowly dance). Learning about adverbs also involved a new spelling rule for adding the ‘ly’ suffix. We discovered that, for most words, we could just add the suffix e.g. ‘careful’ became ‘carefully’. However, if the word ends in ‘y’, we discovered that we needed to change the ‘y’ to an ‘i’ before we could add the suffix e.g. ‘happy’ became ‘happily’. The children were experts at this and were able to add the adverbs that they had created to some command sentences. On Tuesday, we analysed our model text to show our understanding of the language and structural features of instructions. Using a new colour each time, we highlighted the following features: numbers, bullet points, question marks, headings, conjunctions, adverbs, time adverbs and commands. Later in the week, we planned our own instructions for building a habitat where our own unusual creatures could live. These plans look fantastic and I am very much looking forward to reading these instructions next week, after a few days of writing.
On Tuesday, we finished our last lesson on the unit ‘Numbers to 100’ and started our new unit ‘Addition and subtraction’. We have been looking at fact families, number bonds and adding and subtracting 2 multiples of 10 using base ten to help us.
In geography, we have been learning all about the United Kingdom. We studied a map which helped us to discover the four countries of the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), their capital cities (London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast) and their flags. We then used an atlas to locate the countries and capitals and add them to a blank UK map. As an extra challenge, some children added the surrounding seas to their maps. What phenomenal geographers we have in Year Two! In science this week, we looked at the different food groups. Firstly, children were given no other instruction apart from to sort lots of different foods into groups of their choice. As a class, we sorted them out into heathy foods vs non healthy foods, fruit and vegetables vs non-fruit and vegetables and foods you can cook or grill vs foods you can’t cook or grill. We then discovered the food pyramid which consisted of: fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, dairy, protein and fats, oils and spreads and discussed that foods at the bottom of the food pyramid are foods that we should eat a lot more of compared to foods at the top. Finally, we created and labelled our own food pyramid.
These past few weeks, the children have been learning about pitch in music with Mrs Tice. Through the story of Goldilocks and the three bears, we have explored deep pitches for Daddy Bear’s voice and high pitches for Baby Bear’s voice. We have experimented with chime bars to find the lowest and highest pitch. We have then begun to look at how we would write these so someone else could play this- the beginning of understanding how to read music notation.
On Thursday, we were very lucky to have the opportunity to go to St Oswald’s Church for a class service. This began when we played a game where we were not allowed to say yes or no to questions asked to us. As a class, we found this very tricky! The reason behind this is because we usually say things without thinking and sometimes these things might be hurtful to someone else. We decided that we should always think about how another person is feeling and to always be kind to one another. We finished the service by singing one of our favourite songs ‘My Lighthouse’, what a lovely morning we all had!
Have a wonderful weekend! If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask via email, Dojo or through a note in reading diaries.
