Science Week –
We have taken part in lots of experiments, including:
- Table top Glaciers – looking how warm can effect the melting of ice and how we could do our bit to help the world from warming up.
- Magnetic Coins – experimenting on 2p and 1p and talked about why the ones dated 1992 and newer were magnetic and the older ones are not (In 1992 the Royal Mint started using steel as it was cheaper than making them out of copper/tin/zinc)
- Should We Flush it Away? Experimenting with different materials to see if they would dissolve in water or not.
- Magic Ink – making a secret message with water and bicarbonate of soda, then painting over the top with a mixture of hand sanitizer and turmeric to reveal the message.
- Creating wormeries.
Spelling –
Spellings being sent home to learn this week are:
arrived, hoped, using, giving, later, larger, closest, most, both, only
Please practice these in any way that works for your child, ideas have been sent home on a spelling strategy sheet. Keep this sheet safe and use to help learn the spellings each week – we call this our ‘memory lock’.
English – Grandad’s Garden
The children have been planning and writing their own retelling of the story Grandad’s Island, remembering to choose good word choices and adding extra detail.
Maths –
We have now completed the length and height unit and the children have completed the end of Spring term assessment for Spring, this was an arithmetic paper and a reasoning and problem solving paper. We have started with mass and weight. This is a lovely topic to reinforce at home by weighing out ingredients for something tasty.
PSHE -Getting on with others.
The children described and recorded strategies for getting on with others in the classroom, for example, sharing, kindness, lending, borrowing and returning, being patient, thinking about what others want and not just what I want and taking turns.
History –
We have learnt about Samuel Pepys and how his diary has helped us learn about the Great Fire of London in 1666. We then sorted out different sources including; photos, writing and objects and discussed that they are all useful to help us learn today about what the Fire looked like, how the fire was tackled, how people felt and the effect of the fire on London itself.
Science – Mr Simmons allowed us to use the Forest School area to look for minibeasts in their habitat. Rather than picking them up, we tried to observe them in their own habitat.
PE – Ball Skills: How to throw a ball to score. We continue to focus on moving into a space. Then we used our throwing skills to throw more accurately. We ensured that we were always keeping our eye on the ball and that we were always ready to catch it.
Art – This was a big week as we prepared for our print in the style of Hanna Dunnett. Some worked with a friend, others independently to stick string onto cardboard, creating either a sea or field image. It was important that we cut the string safely and that we used the right amount of glue.
Have a lovely weekend, hope the sun continues to shine!
