In English this week we have been innovating Jim and the Beanstalk. This means that after learning the story, we change some of the 'ingredients' of the story to make our own version. For example, instead of Jim going up the beanstalk and finding a giant, the children suggested he found a troll, a hairy spider, a terrifying alien, etc and instead of it living in a castle, it might live in a deep, dark cave, a treehouse or a down an underground tunnel. You have some very imaginative children and they came up with so many ideas!
In maths we have continued with addition. We learnt that we can use our number bonds to 10 to work out our number bonds to 20. We have been using our number bonds to add too, e.g. I can work out 8 + 4 by first adding 2 to get to 10 and then adding 2 more. Next week we will be moving onto subtraction.
In PSHE, we discussed what friendship is, what makes a good friend and what doesn't make a good friend. Then we listened to a story where the character was always wanting to be first in EVERYTHING. We discussed why he wasn't being a good friend and how it make everyone else feel. We concluded that we should realise that everyone likes to have a go at winning, and actually it's the taking part and having fun that counts, not just being first.
In our topic we looked at maps. In Kagan teams, the children used a simple map of the school grounds and moved Beebot by following simple instructions. This also gave us an opportunity to put some of our PSHE into practice as we had to share the Beebot and take turns in our group.
Next week we are having a Staying Safe Week. We'll be looking at fire safety, keeping safe in our home and what to do if we get lost when we are out. I will send home some information about what we have done in class so that you can continue the discussion at home.
