Year 1 w/b 9th November
Date: 13th Nov 2020 @ 4:38pm
After our exciting spaceship discovery last week, we have continued to look at the story of Beegu. This week that has included creating a friend for Beegu, planning and writing character descriptions and responding to the beautiful illustrations from the text. We wrote character descriptions in the style of Alex T. Smith. Have a look at the attached pictures of Beegu’s friends for your children to share with you.
Our work in Power Maths has included more use of the part, whole method for understanding numbers. We have been applying this to support our speedy recall of number bonds within 10. An example of this would be just knowing that 5+3=8 rather than using an addition strategy to find the answer. This is something we will continue to work on and build to recall number facts for numbers within 20 with speed and fluency.
After introducing our new Science topic about humans and the senses last week, we have identified, named, drawn and labelled the basic parts of the human body. We also compared two children in the class based on what is the same about them and what is different. We noticed that the two children we compared both had 2 nostrils, they both had 10 fingers and that they both had all of their milk teeth. We noticed that they were different in other ways such at the fact that one was taller and one was shorter, one had blue eyes and the other had brown, one had size 13 feet and the other had size 10.5 feet. We added the similarities and differences to a table to show the information we had collected. We all know that part of being a great scientist is making great observations. Year One were fantastic at this!
Our phonics focus has been ur (nurse with a purse) and ea (cup of tea) so spelling homework will reflect this on Monday. On Monday we will add this to Showbie to be printed out at home or worked on online. Please check Showbie on Monday.
In Gymnastics we have continued to work on our gymnastics balances and positions from last week while safely introducing the use of some gymnastic equipment. We were able to carefully get onto, travel along, hold balance on and jump off equipment such as benches and gymnastic tables. While doing this we had to remember to act like gymnasts with careful, controlled movements. Mr Ray and Mrs Walker from Multiflex were very impressed with all us!
Linked to our work in English we have designed friends for Beegu in design and technology. We have learned how to make patterns from these designs and have chosen the fabric and joining techniques to be used in making a comforter or hand mitt.
Geography exploration focused on finding the best place for Beegu to find shelter in our school grounds by naming and then sorting the physical and human features in our grounds. Finally, forest school involved building homes for Beegu using the physical / natural features in our school grounds.
In RE this week, as part of our focus on Christian Community we looked at the life of Mary Jones to consider her motivation for wanting a Bible so very much. The second week in November is interfaith week so Collective worship has aimed to increase our awareness of faith communities and has celebrated the contributions members of different faiths make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society. Year 1 were equally surprised at the similarities between many of the world faiths as much as being fascinated in some of the differences. Perhaps they could tell you something new or interesting they have learnt about other faiths this week?
Finally, we ended the week with lots of fun and excitement while taking part in activities to support Children in Need. This included fun maths activities and a Joe Wicks work out. Thank you all for your support towards this great cause.
