Year 1 w/b 6th May 2024
Date: 10th May 2024 @ 4:17pm
We’ve had another super week in Year 1 with lots of fantastic learning taking place. The sunshine has also supported our joyful week.
In PSHE we have been thinking about how new learning that takes place, and how we must persevere and keep trying even if we find things tricky. We talked about learning to ride a bike, writing our name, learning to swim etc it all takes great practice and determination.
In Phonics we continue to recap all our taught sounds. Supporting this at home by reading the real and alien (nonsense) we send home will support your child’s reading confidence. As mentioned on the homework sheets, we use the language ‘special friends’ to find digraphs and trigraphs in words, ‘Fred talk’ to segment words and read the sounds, then ‘say the’ word to blend and read.
This week has included some marvellous writing from Year One. After planning our own imitation stories last week based on the story ‘The Secret of Black Rock’, this week we have written our own stories. It has been fantastic to see the children refer to our original model text and text map and to also remember to include many of the writer hints and features from the original text. Our working wall really came in handy this week! Features that we have been using in our writing include similes, repeated refrains, story language and even some spoke language. To finish the week, the children read their stories to a friend in the class and gave each other positive feedback. It was wonderful to see the pride and sense of achievement radiate from our Year 1 writers.
In maths we have been looking at quarters, both of shapes and quantities. The children have looked at real life examples such as a pizza, watermelon and cake cut into quarters. We talked about how it needs to be in equal parts and how we show this in our work using a ruler carefully. We then shared the fruit left on our snack tray into four equal parts. We will no move on from our introduction to fractions and will look at position and direction. On Friday we introduced this by checking our knowledge of left and right. We then started to make whole turns, half turns and quarter turns to both the left and right. You will have seen a little slip of paper came home to remind children to continue to work on this at home.
In History the children have loved practising their ‘Lady with the Lamp’ song. We also had to sequence and order Florence Nightingales life looking carefully at the dates and what significant events took place at that time.
In PE the children have been doing some amazing athletics indoors. We have been focusing on our jumping skills such as propelling forward using our arms to help, two feet jumping and standing broad jump. It has been great to see the children working as a team as they complete the different jumping relay races.
In DT this week we looked at the design process so far and filled in our knowledge organisers with the information we have found out. After this we had the opportunity to research potential construction materials and methods to create our playground equipment before making our plans with a partner. Next week we will be getting busy creating the final models.
Our class photograph is ready to view using the QR code or information on the letters that came home with children on Friday. It is a fantastic photo!
We hope you have a lovely weekend ready for another action-packed week of learning.
Long may this sunny weather continue!
