Year 1 w/b 6th December
Date: 10th Dec 2021 @ 5:12pm
It’s been another wonderful week to teach Year 1 and we have thoroughly enjoyed performing our Prickly Hay nativity for you. It is a privilege to be telling the story of the first Christmas and we have been amazed at the children’s confidence and joy as they shared the story of Jesus’s birth with everyone. We have endeavoured to capture pictures of most of the children for you and they are attached below.
It has also been our assessment week in school, so this has given the children the opportunity to show themselves and us just how much they have learned over the last term in phonics/reading, writing and mathematics. It has also been assessment week in Muliflex as children’s progress in speed bounce, javelin throwing and standing jumps was measured.
The high winds on Tuesday meant forest school moved inside as we created our robin pictures using foraged leaves. This week in Geography we looked at the various maps that we might come across every day. We looked at picture maps and had a look at our school and grounds on Google Maps. Using the maps, we identified some key human and physical features on and around our school. We then used cardboard cut outs of features and created a picture map of our school grounds and labelled the human and physical features. Finally, we used our picture maps to draw our school grounds.
This has been our final week of Design and Technology for this term. We have completed our projects by using the joining methods we researched at the start of this unit to join our comforters/puppets. This was the trickiest part and required us to develop our chosen methods. Once complete we were able to evaluate both our finished products and the methods we used. Thinking about the parts we liked, the things that were a challenge and the things we would change next time. As you can see from the photographs all children were extremely proud of their creations and can’t wait to bring them home to show you very soon!
In HeartSmart this week the title of our learning was ‘Taking Care of Me’, where we had to consider different ways, we can take care of ourselves every day. We started by thinking about Boris the robot and the things he might need to look after himself (oil, new screws, love etc.) We then began to think of ways we look after ourselves by picking out everyday objects from a bag, naming the objects and thinking about why they are important. After looking at objects such a toothbrush, a glass of water, food, tissues, and a comb we thought about things such as medicine bottles, a tub of eczema cream and an inhaler and how children may sometimes use to help take care of themselves but that unlike the other items, these ones should be kept out of their reach and only ever be used with their parents/carer’s supervision. All children were great at talking about everyday ways to take care of themselves.
Finally, today we have enjoyed an RE ‘Incarnation’ day reflecting on what the nativity teaches us about Jesus. We looked at passages from the Bible and how Jesus is described by the angel Gabriel, the shepherds, and wise men. In the afternoon we considered who in the nativity story we would consider to be the most important and why. Earlier in the week beautiful Christmas cards were designed inspired by the first Christmas and we hope you will enjoy receiving these next week.
Thank you again for your encouragement, support, and enthusiasm for all the learning your children are involved with in school.
