Year 1 w/b 5th October
Date: 9th Oct 2020 @ 4:09pm
Well what a busy and wonderful week it has been! In English we have completed our escape stories and we are so proud and thrilled by the children’s efforts and achievements. Thank fully, all the villains were defeated in the end and our main characters lived happily ever after. We have now started to look at instructions for how to trap a troll using conjunctions to sequence events. Please see our video where we have practised retelling our instructions from our instruction map. Our phonic focus has been igh and oo so spelling homework will reflect this on Monday.
Power Maths books have now been introduced and this week our focus has been accurate counting and recording of numbers, identifying sets and one more or less than a given number.
Topic activities have included designing our William Morris tiles in soft B pencils, learning about the invention of the telephone by Alexander Graham Bell and Tom Watson and ordering a range of telephones in chronological order and we foraged for twigs and woodland treasure in forest school to make our crosses. In science we have continued our learning about plants, this week we have looked at pinecones, acorns, sycamore seeds and catkins. We used our observation skills to look closely then completed ‘I see, I think, I wonder’ cards to record our thoughts. We have built on last week’s introduction to how to be HeartSmart in PSHE and thought about a range of power sources including ourselves as a source of power. We considered how we have the power to do good and make people feel good but that we also have the power to also make people feel bad when we are not being HeartSmart.
In RE we have considered who should care for the world and how this can be achieved and in Collective worship , we have continued to focus on the words of Jesus. This week we have looked at Jesus’ teaching on forgiveness from Matthew 18 v21-22 and how the lives of individuals like Corrie Ten Boom have been influenced by such teachings. Next week we focus on harvest and shall be supporting the work of The Storehouse in Congleton, a local foodbank. A separate letter with further details has been sent to all parents and carers.
Next week in our guided reading sessions we shall be reassessing reading progress over the past 6 weeks and book colours will be changed /adapted where necessary.
Have a lovely weekend and enjoy the autumn colours- glorious!
