Year 1 w/b 4th July

Date: 8th Jul 2022 @ 5:48pm

Poetry has been our focus in English this week. Year One know that poems are a collection of descriptions using imaginative words and phrases that sound great when read aloud. Our week started by revealing what was in our treasure chest and we used adjectives, similes and alliteration to talk about and write our descriptions. Next, we listened to poetry being read aloud and performed our own, having read The Ning, Nang Noo by Spike Milligan and Crayon Poem by James Carter.  Finally, we discovered Mrs Pulle’s auntie was pirate and read the poem Mrs Pulle had written about her auntie. We noticed this was a poem with rhyme but recognised that not all poems needed to rhyme. In phonics, we focused on words with -y ending, for example family, party and funny, plus compound words and suffix endings ( ed, ing and er) We shall send our final phonics homework out on Monday. Thank you to everyone that has completed this every week since September and challenged themselves with the sentences.

This week in maths our focus remains on numbers to 100. We have partitioned 2-digit numbers, identifying the tens and ones before comparing numbers using the < > = symbols. This is such an area of strength for the class. From mid-week we explored number bonds to 100. The Children were encouraged to link number bonds to 100 with number bonds to 10, to help them develop a strong conceptual understanding of number bonds to 100 which will help them in their future mathematics. A secure understanding of 2-digit numbers will support children’s understanding of, and ability to work with, numbers and the number system.

On Thursday we looked at My Happy Mind and discussed how we can calm our brain down when it is feeling sad, scared or worried and what happens to our brains and bodies when we do happy breathing. After practicing happy breathing, we all agreed that this relaxes our bodies and brains and helps our Team H-A-P.

In music, we played the ‘traffic light’ game where each child chose an instrument and when they were shown the green light, they played their instrument, but when it was red, they stopped. Afterwards, children got into small groups and chose an animal. Whilst thinking about the pitch and timbre to reflect the animal, they then decided which instruments would be suitable to play. Each group created a wonderful rhythmic pattern and performed this in front of the rest of the class.

In PE this week, we enjoyed practising races and on Friday we had a Sports Day practise. The children will be taking part in 3 races on 15th July: a sprint, obstacle and packing a holiday bag race. You are welcome to come along and support the class with their races from 9.15- 10.15am next Friday on the field at the front of school. Please look out for the sticker in your child’s planner, detailing which team they will be in and which colour t-shirt to wear. Finally, the group B swimmers really enjoyed their fun swim session yesterday afternoon and the photos below capture a little of the excitement.

Next week we shall teach 3 lessons on SRE:

Lesson 1- Keeping clean. Knowing how to keep clean and look after yourself.

Lesson 2-Growing and changing. To know that people grow and change, from babies to children and adults. To know the difference between boy and girl babies.

Lesson 3- Families and care. To know that there are different types of family and to know which people we can ask for help.

Finally, don’t forget we have our Pirate day on Thursday 14th July. Please come to school dressed as a pirate for a pirate themed day of art and craft and following maps to discover the treasure.

Enjoy the sun and have a great weekend everyone.
