Year 1 w/b 3rd October
Date: 6th Oct 2022 @ 6:13pm
At the end of last week, we innovated our text maps, changing parts of the text to make it our own. We have used these innovated text maps to write out own letters. This has given us the opportunity to use a known text and make it personal to us. This has given us the confidence to apply our known writing skills. Our biggest focus in writing is to ‘say it, write it and check it’. Using our text maps to help form our sentences helps with the ‘say it’ part of writing before we write. Next week we will move to look at instruction writing using themes from our key text ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’.
In phonics we have reviewed the sounds ay (may I play) and ee (what can you see), writing words with these sounds in sentences and adding the suffixes where appropriate. Monday’s spelling homework therefore will reflect this teaching and gives the children a further opportunity to embed their learning with you at home. Thank you again for your support encouraging your child to practise these at home and to use them in sentences with the common exception words of the week. Spelling homework should be handed in on Friday each week.
This week in Maths we have been exploring the following symbols:
> means greater than or more than
< means less than or fewer than
= means equal to or the same as
Understanding these symbols has allowed us to compare numbers and to put numbers and objects in order. Next week we will move to looking at parts and wholes and the part-whole model.
In Collective worship, our Ethos Council have helped us launch our Harvest Appeal for 2022 and as you will have read in our email, we are encouraging anyone that can to contribute non-perishable goods and toiletries to the ‘Brereton Pantry’ and CHANCE changing lives for the homeless in Crewe and Nantwich.
Within RE, we discussed who was responsible for looking after the world God created and how we could care for the world. The class had thoughtful ideas including recycling, walking and cycling more than going in the car, planting and litter picking.
Mr Simmon’s forest school this week has supported our learning in science and we spent time sorting leaves into those from deciduous and evergreen leaves. We are getting confident now at classifying and identifying many trees from our school grounds. We then explored in science different ways of sorting leaves into groups other than deciduous and evergreen, so children were looking at the size, shape and colour of the leaves.
This week in PSHE we have focused on Black history month and how it is celebrated. It is a time to celebrate the achievements of Black people in the past and present. We were amazed to discover that Black people have not always been treated fairly and that in some history books Black people have not been recognised for their achievements. We found out about some Black people in the past and present like Ignatius Sancho and his campaign against Black slavery, Mary Seacole who opened her own hospital in Crimea, Alice Coachman the first Black woman to win an Olympic medal and Barack Obama, the first Black president of the USA.
In History we have compared the features of toys from the past and toys from the present. Using a venn diagram to sort pictures of toys, we also added adjectives to share how we, as historians, had come to sort the toys.
In PE we continue to build on our known dance moves and this week focused on adding these elements of our dance together. We know the dance moves well when we work on them but when added to the speed of the music, we must listen carefully to ensure our moves are in time.
Our Art session this week build on our knowledge of William Morris and his artwork. We have started to put together our final piece of artwork. We will be creating a polyblock print in a style influenced by the work of William Morris. This week we have been thinking about and printing the backgrounds of our prints. Next week we will create a still life image that we can print into the foreground using repeating patterns.
This week we have also welcomed Mrs Knott into our classroom, as next Thursday will be Mrs Lindersen’s last day in Year One before she starts her maternity leave. Mrs Lindersen will be sorely missed by us all. I am sure you will wish to join us in saying thank you for everything and wishing her all the best and greatest happiness as she, alongside her husband and daughter, prepare for the arrival of their second child and a brother or sister for Sanna. We eagerly await meeting Mr and Mrs Lindersen’s baby after half term.
Mrs Lindersen’s maternity leave will mark a little change to teaching days in Year One. Mrs Pulle will now be working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Knott will teach on Thursday and Friday. We continue to work together and plan on a Tuesday afternoon whilst Year One are enjoying forest school.
Finally, it was wonderful to share our Harvest service with you today . We really enjoyed sharing our harvest thoughts and celebrating the great work and passion of the farming community.
With many thanks as always,
The Year One team
