Year 1 w/b 3rd March 2025

Date: 7th Mar 2025 @ 3:45pm

We have had a busy but exciting week of learning in Year One.

In English this week we have been introduced to our portal narrative model text based on the story ‘Where the Wild Things Are. We have analysed the text, looked at the language features used and answered some questions to check our understanding. This will all help us when we come to write our own portal narrative next week.

In phonics we have been focusing on kn (knock knock, who’s there?) and wh (whisk, whisk).

In maths, we have come to the end of our addition and subtraction unit (within 20). We have been focusing on addition and subtraction fact families for numbers within 20 and exploring missing number problems. Bar models and part-whole models were a useful representation for this.

In history we have started to look at homes from the past. We looked at homes from the Medieval, Tudor, Georgian and Victorian times. We particularly liked the black and white stripes on the Tudor buildings. Next week we will be looking at Victorian homes in more detail.

In art, we discovered the three primary colours (red, blue and yellow). We looked at what primary colours can be mixed to make secondary colours. We are looking forward to creating our own jungle themed background using lots of colours we have discovered to help us do this.

In science, we completed our end of unit quiz for our materials topic and were introduced to our next topic, animals including humans. We have thought about, drawn, and labelled animals that might live in the countryside around Brereton. We have also started to consider ways of sorting animals into groups and explained our reasoning.

In RE, we focused on the key events of the Easter story. Later on, we looked at paintings of the resurrection and thought about the ways in which these paintings reflect the message of new life and transformation.

We have had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day on Thursday! Thank you all for your support at home; the children looked fantastic! First, we enjoyed taking part in the online event ‘Picture book adventures and storytime with Laura Baker’ featuring the book ‘The Full Stop That Got Away’ and even had the chance to draw along with Laura herself. Next, we listened to our new story ‘Petal and Nettle and the Big Birthday Surprise’ and designed our own front covers. Finally, we thought about our class book ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and created our own boats to display in our classroom. What a lovely day we had!

On March 21st, it is World Down Syndrome Day and to celebrate this, we have planted our own sunflowers. Just like sunflowers, every child grows and blooms uniquely. We would all like to thank Miss Thorley for this fantastic opportunity! We look forward to celebrating the journey of our sunflowers on March 21st so please send in some photos if you can!

I hope you all have a great weekend.
