Year 1 w/b 3rd February 2025
Date: 7th Feb 2025 @ 11:54am
What an exciting week we have had in Year One! Thank you so much for coming to see us in our classroom on Thursday morning at our learning exhibition. We really enjoyed sharing with you all of the exciting things we have been learning about this half term.
It was lovely to see the range of outfits on Detective Day from detective mice, explorers to Sherlock Holmes and a range of sleuths with magnifying glasses, name badges and hats. Thank you for your help encouraging your children to dress up and really engage with the day.
Our focus in the morning was discovering how slider mechanisms could make a moving picture. Our investigations started with an opportunity to explore sliders in order that the children understood:
- sliders are mechanisms
- sliders can make things move
- moving models can be created that use sliders
- the vocabulary: up, down, left, right, vertical and horizontal to describe movement.
Secondly, we designed the background, moving part and described the movement in a moving picture based on our focus text Hermelin. Finally, we used our magnifying glasses to help us to uncover the mystery of Mr Snuggles.
In English this week we have looked closely at the letter written by Hermelin to Mrs Mattison and have highlighted our text identifying adjectives and imperative (bossy) verbs. We have boxed up the letter into the three sections and looked at the language/layout features. Next week, we will plan our own letters written by Hermelin to someone else on Offley Street.
In phonics we have focused on ear (hear with your ear) and ure (sure it is pure), these sounds will be reflected in next week’s spellings and the videos will be available on dojo for you to watch at home with your child.
In maths we have focused on exploring number bonds to 20 and learning about doubles (adding two equal quantities together). Building numbers using the pair-wise patterns on ten frames helped us to see the doubles.
This week has been children’s mental health week and our theme has been ‘Know yourself, grow yourself’. To celebrate this, we enjoyed playing ‘children bingo’ and found more out about each other and ourselves too. We thought about our connections with our friends and what emotions we felt when taking part in the activity. We agreed that we don’t always know everything about everyone and whilst we are all different, we also have similarities.
We are looking forward to our trip to the farm next Tuesday afternoon!
I hope you have a great weekend.
