Year 1 w/b 30th September 2024

Date: 4th Oct 2024 @ 4:19pm

We have had a wonderful week in Year One!

In English this week, we continued to learn the words and actions to our text map ‘How to trap a soldier’. The children blew us away with how quickly they could remember the whole text map! After this, we wrote our imitation of the instructions. We are looking forward to planning and writing our own innovations next week.

In phonics we have reviewed the sounds igh (fly high) and ow (blow the snow ) or ee (What can you see?) and ea (cup of tea), writing words with these sounds in sentences and adding the suffixes where appropriate. Monday’s spelling homework therefore will reflect this teaching and gives the children a further opportunity to embed their learning with you at home. Thank you again for your support encouraging your child to practise these at home and to use them in sentences with the common exception words of the week.

In maths this week, we have been focusing on the following:

  • Describing whether there are ‘fewer’, ‘more’ or the ‘same’ number of objects.
  • Comparing numerical values using the vocabulary ‘less than’, ‘greater than’ or ‘equal to’.
  • Compare pairs of numbers within 10.

Our art session this week build on our knowledge of William Morris and his artwork. We have started to put together our final piece of artwork. We enjoyed searching the playground for different types of leaves and careful drew them, making sure to add lots of detail. We will be creating a polyblock print in a style influenced by the work of William Morris next week.

We have continued our learning about transport from the past in history, this week focussing on the invention of aeroplanes. We enjoyed finding out about how aeroplanes were first invented and how designs have changed over time. We finished our lesson thinking about how the Wright brothers would have felt when they first watched their aeroplane fly.

In RE this week, we thought about how harvest is a time to say thank you to God for all of earth’s gifts.

In science this week, we looked at the parts of a tree (roots, bark, trunk, braches, crown and leaves) and worked as a team to place the vocabulary on the correct part of the tree.

Our PE focus was rolling safely and strongly on the gymnastic mats. We learned how to perform tuck rolls and log rolls and it was lovely to observe children in pairs supporting and encouraging each other as they learned to master this new skill.

It was wonderful to celebrate our Harvest festival with you at St Oswald's Church on Thursday. We were very proud of all of the children. What beautiful voices they have!

I hope you have a great weekend.
