Year 1 w/b 2nd October 2023
Date: 6th Oct 2023 @ 4:06pm
At the end of last week, we innovated our text maps, changing parts of the text to make it our own. We have used these innovated text maps to write out own letters. This has both given us the opportunity to use a known text and make it personal to us and given us the confidence to apply our known writing skills. Our biggest focus in writing is to ‘say it, write it and check it’. Using our text maps to help form our sentences helps with the ‘say it’ part of writing before we write. Next week we will move to look at instruction writing using themes from our key text ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’.
In phonics we have reviewed the sounds igh (fly high) and ow (blow the snow ) or ee (What can you see?) and oi (spoil the boy), writing words with these sounds in sentences and adding the suffixes where appropriate. Monday’s spelling homework therefore will reflect this teaching and gives the children a further opportunity to embed their learning with you at home. Thank you again for your support encouraging your child to practise these at home and to use them in sentences with the common exception words of the week. Spelling homework should be handed in on Friday each week.
This week in Maths we have been comparing and ordering numbers. We have used number lines with missing numbers to help us identify which numbers are missing. The children were also very good at spotting if there was a mistake in a number line. Next week we will begin to look at part-whole models.
During our Forest School session this week the children were tasked with using a wooden peg to create something. It was wonderful to see the children’s imaginations shine as they created characters, animals, modes of transport and some of our favourite foods just to name a few.
This week in Science we thought about how a deciduous tree changes through the year, looking specifically at an apple tree. We watched a video to show how the tree changed in each season and then had a go at making our own illustrations to show the changes.
Our Art session this week build on our knowledge of William Morris and his artwork. We have started to put together our final piece of artwork. We will be creating a polyblock print in a style influenced by the work of William Morris. This week we have been thinking about and printing the backgrounds of our
prints. Next week we will create a still life image that we can print into the foreground using repeating patterns.
In History we have continued looking at the history of transport. This week we have looked at the inventions of cars and how they have developed over time. We were really surprised that when cars were first invented they didn’t have a roof! We also had a look at Bentley motors and used Google maps to locate the factory in Crewe. We were all really surprised that such fast cars were built so close to Brereton.
We had an extra bit of excitement this week when Rock Staedy came to visit encouraging us all to have a go at playing a range of instruments . We learned about steady rhythms , beats and the effects of an amplifer for electric guitars. Some of us even featured in a little band on vocals singing ‘Shotgun’ by George Ezra. If Rock Steady is not an option for your child, Love Music Trust offers music lessons on a weekly basis in school. Your child could learn the guitar, clarinet, piano, violin and viola to name but a few. Please ask if you would like more details
In this week’s Collective Worship we thought about how we are all made in God’s image and how He loves us all. As part of Black History Month, we learnt about how Marcus Rashford has led a campaign to feed children during the pandemic and our Ethos Council reflected how we could do the same by supporting our Harvest Campaign. Back in class, we designed our own football boots filled with messages of empowerment and love. This linked well with our work in RE where we examined the charities trying to empower people overseas as they cope with failed harvests affected by climate change
It was wonderful to celebrate our Harvest festival with you in Church on Thursday. We were very proud of all of the children and were delighted to see so many of them volunteering to speak in Church. We really enjoyed sharing our thoughts about Harvest with you and thinking carefully about the important work of Chance Changing Lives and the Brereton Food Pantry.
It’s been another busy but most enjoyable week and we hope you can all enjoy the good weather forecast for the weekend.
