Welcome back after half term and we hope you were able to enjoy time away from school. It’s been lovely to see photos from your adventures , near or far over half term on Showbie. If you are struggling to register on this site please let us know as soon as possible as all future homework and home learning tasks will be posted on this platform.
We had a surprising start to our new term when Mr Simmons alerted us to something extraordinary in our school grounds. Amazingly, a spaceship had crashed into a pile of woodland debris on our school field scattering it’s lights and puffing out smoke. On further investigation we realised the spaceship was remarkably similar to one in a space book called ‘Beegu.’ This discovery led to a very lively debate and many questions about who could fly a spaceship like this? Would it ever fly again and where was the person flying it? We considered our likes, dislikes , puzzles and patterns by exploring the first page of Beegu. Next we acted out the first part of the story and thought about what the characters may be thinking and saying. This helped us to understand Beegu’s feeling and describe her personality.
Our phonic focus has been ow ( brown cow) and er ( better letter) so spelling homework will reflect this on Monday. We will send paper copies of this homework this week but from next week this work will be added to Showbie to be printed from home.
Our work in Power Maths has introduced the class to the part, part whole model. The aim is for children to confidently partition numbers within ten using this model and for them to write the associated number sentences and be flexible with where they write the = symbol; for example, to know that 3 + 2 = 5 and 5 = 3 + 2 represent the same fact. As children gain in confidence, they can compare number sentences using the = symbols, and use a systematic approach to solve problems.
Topic activities have included naming and labelling different parts of the body and then the face in particular in science work. Within history we explored who Guy Fawkes was and why he plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and in design and technology we in preparation for making a comforter or hand mitt for Beegu we explored different ways to join fabric including gluing, pinning and stapling.
Gymnastics is our PE focus this half term. We looked at different balances- tuck, pike, straddle, dish and dome before we balanced on one, two, three and four parts of the body.
In RE we are exploring Christian Community and this week we have looked at photos from St Oswalds to discover how Christians worship God through singing, praying and learning from the Bible. Remembrance has been our focus in Collective worship and we reflected on the reasons for wearing a poppy. We also enjoyed a short class Remembrance service where we prayed for those people who have fought in wars and are still fighting today. Following this experience, in forest school we found a tree as focal point for our calm remembering and surrounded it with red and yellow leaves to represent the poppy and marigolds.
Have a lovely weekend and see you on Monday.
With many thanks
Mrs Pulle and Mrs Lindersen
