Year 1 w/b 2nd January 2023
Date: 6th Jan 2023 @ 7:57pm
Welcome back to a new term in Year One, we hope you have all enjoyed a fun filled break. We have certainly enjoyed welcoming the children back to school and have been very impressed with the way they have settled into a new term. Our week began with an exciting and intriguing discovery: a package containing an old cheese box had been dropped off at school for the attention of Year One. We were instantly fascinated to find out who this cheese box belonged to and what was inside. As we opened it, we were shocked to discover many tiny objects belonging to someone very small. We found binoculars, a magnifying glass, a book, cheese crumbs, a miniature book, a well-used pencil, and a tiny letter addressed to Mr Potts on Offley Street. Where was Offley Street? Who did these things belong to? Thankfully our key text for this half term answered many of our questions. We will be looking at the story of Hermelin (the detective mouse) by Mini Grey. The book revealed that Hermelin is in fact the name of the cheese and also the name of a reading, writing, detective mouse! We can’t wait to find out more about Hermelin and the residents of Offley Street over the next few weeks.
At the beginning of the week the children spent some time thinking about our schools vision and values. We reminded ourselves of the values we all follow at Brereton and why it is important. It was fantastic to see how compassionate all of the children in Year one were when thinking about others in our school.
In phonics we have focussed on u-e (huge brute) and aw (yawn at dawn) and thank you again for your continued support encouraging your children to practise spellings and sentences at home containing these sounds.
In maths we have been looking at numbers to 20, practicing forming them correctly, ordering numbers and ensuring we count objects up to 20 accurately. We have been very impressed by the children’s confidence in maths, a great start to the new term.
Our science learning built on our sensory walk from last term. Our big question was ‘Which part of the body is good for feeling and which is not?’ whilst blindfolded the class took turns to feel different materials with different body parts. They tried feeling with their noses, elbows, chin, and fingertips. It was surprising how sensitive some of these parts were, so we made some interesting discoveries.
This week we introduced our new Geography unit: Farming in Brereton and we learnt about the three main types of farming (arable, livestock and dairy). It was great to involve children in the learning by sharing their first hand farming experiences.
This half term our PE sessions are all about multiskills. The children will develop a range of skills over this term but this week we had great fun perfecting our balance whilst moving in a variety of ways and enjoyed challenging ourselves by adding in different equipment. A little reminder that PE lessons are now on a Friday.
We have had a couple of technical difficulties with the photos for this week but we will upload them as soon as we can next week!
We are looking forward to another busy and fun filled term,
The Year One Team
