Year 1 w/b 25th April
Date: 29th Apr 2022 @ 5:48pm
This week we have really enjoying reading ‘The secret of Black Rock’ by Joe Todd- Stanton and we have worked in pairs to write book reviews focusing on our likes, dislikes and questions. We have explored the four parts to this return story and used conjunctions to join clauses. We especially liked using because, but and so. Next, we have identified the structure and language features of a return story and became sentence Doctors as we fixed punctuation. Finally, we have planned our innovation changing the character, where they lived and the scary mountain.
In phonics, we have focused on all the ee sounds – ee what can you see? ea cup of tea, e-e (Go Pete and Steve), e,(me/she/he/be), and -y (happy family). We have also added an additional daily phonics review lesson as we head towards the Year 1 Phonics assessment task after half term.
Maths Mastery lessons have helped embed our speed in recognising and comparing odd and even numbers In Power maths we have focused on weight, estimating, and measuring the weight of items in nonstandard units (using multilink for example) and recognising items that balance the scales. We have compared and ordered the weights of familiar objects and have used simple mathematical reasoning and our understanding of addition and subtraction to solve a range of word problems involving weight.
In RE we have started our Discipleship unit with a focus on Zacchaeus the tax collector and how his thoughts and feelings changed before and after meeting Jesus. In Collective Worship we explored Elijah and his courage in listening to God and persuading others to do the same as he builds an altar. On Thursday, it was great to welcome Bishop Sam Corley to Brereton. He thoroughly enjoyed his tour of school and meeting everyone before he led a worship which involved us all learning a little more about the roles and responsibilities of being a Bishop in the Church of England. Miss Witham and I have also enjoyed starting our 'Bible Explorers' after school club this week and we have included a few photos from this post resurrection session on 'The road to Emmaus.'
Last week we launched our new topic in science on animals. We considered what animals we have living in Brereton and what features that have that identify their species such as tail, wing, fur, feathers, beak, paws, and hooves. Next, we aimed to classify animals into groups, and we explored the terms, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Finally, we designed our own pet, explaining is features and classification. This work in science will help us get the most out of our trip to Chester Zoo where we will become animal classification experts! Forest school with Mr Simmons involved us exploring the life and habitats of minibeasts and the photos below show our excited learning.
This week we have started our new music unit called ‘Under the Sea’. Our focus this week was on singing and chanting familiar songs and rhymes in unison and performing with a steady sense of pulse. We started by introducing a new game called the fish game. You might like to have a go at home! We then build on our understanding and sense of pulse by listening to, then preforming, ‘Walking through the Jungle.’ Next week we will have ago at adding our own new verse that fits the rhythm and theme of the song. We will also add instruments to fit the different animals in each verse.
After our visit to the park in Design Technology last week, we first recapped our visit including the equipment we observed, the materials used and any shapes that we noticed in the play equipment. We then conducted a survey in the class to find the most popular item of play equipment. In our class this was the climbing frame. Finally, we used what we have found out so far to create a design brief for our model playgrounds. We will use this to help us at the end of the unit when we are evaluating our finished models.
In PE, this week we continued to build our hand-eye coordination when throwing, catching, and rolling a ball. Our focus this half term is striking and fielding games. Starting with cricket has been a fun introduction with the added element of trying to improve our accuracy when aiming for the wickets when throwing.
We are delighted to welcome Miss Ridge into Year 1 as a student teacher completing her PGCE year in Education. We shall endeavour to introduce her to you over the coming weeks and she will remain in school with us until the end of June.
Enjoy the Bank Holiday and let us hope for a return to some slightly warmer weather.
