Year 1 w/b 24th February 2025
Date: 28th Feb 2025 @ 3:52pm
It has been wonderful to welcome back Year One to the second half of the spring term!
We were very excited when we arrived on Monday to find lots of branches, a boy dressed up in a wolf suit and a sailboat with ‘Max’ on the side of it. After making predictions on what we thought our story was about, our story was revealed as ‘Where The Wild Things Are’ by Maurice Sendak. Whilst reading our new story, we noticed some interesting vocabulary such as gnashed, tamed and mischief, and used these words in own sentences. Later in the week, we were introduced to the suffixes -er (quicker) and -est (quickest) and worked with a partner to write new sentences using these suffixes.
In phonics we have focused on the sounds cious (scrumptious, delicious) and ck (tick, tock clock!) so spelling homework next week with reflect this focus.
In maths this week, we have continued with our addition and subtraction (within 20) unit. We have been focusing on the following:
- Subtracting within 20 using knowledge of number bonds. For example, if we know the number bond 7 – 5 = 2, then we know that 17 – 5 = 12
- Using the counting back strategy for numbers within 20, including subtractions that cross 10. Crossing out and using a number line are particularly useful for counting back to work out subtractions
- Finding the difference and exploring it as a form of subtraction
In history this week we introduced our new unit of work focussing on homes from the past. To create a personal connection to the topic we started with our own homes and what they look like and will use this starting point to delve into history.
In DT, we have enjoyed finishing our moving pictures of Offley Street.
In RE, we became nature detectives as we went on a walk to look for signs of nature coming alive. After this, we planted cress seeds in cotton wool and thought about the first Easter.
In science we completed an investigation to find a suitable material for a coat. The coat had to be waterproof, so we looked at this property. We added water to each material and observed what happened. We were able to conclude that plastic was particularly good at keeping the water (rain) out.
I hope you all have a great weekend.
